Hey all
I am restoring my 67 S0-42 Westfalia. I would prefer to replace some of the old screws with new screws if feasible. I want to find out size and thread type of these screws so I can buy them, if you know a place where I can get a kit that would be great too. I have posted the pictures of the part and the screws to make it easy for you Smile

Part category: Jalousie windows
----------------------------------
1. Screws that attaches the lightweight aluminum frame to the body. There are four of them. See the picture.
2. Screws that attaches Jalousie window to the body. There are 20 small screws. See the picture.
3. 8 Screws that attaches the Window form inside body frame. See the picture

These guys have stainless steel packages. They might have something.
Also you might try taking your screws to Your local hardware to get matched up.

Wolfsburg West has all the Bitch’in seals for rebuilding your windows, i did mine one at a time. For the screws, i bought a bunch at my local Ace Hardware or Tru Value. I went with Stainless Steel.

Try McMaster Carr online, fasteners.

Good luck

It's not easy to get the same profile, they don't the look bad just soak them in Ospho for a bit.

Yep - thanks , I already ordered them Smile. It is hard to order online without knowing the profile. When I did my 71 windows I took the screws to Ace, Home Deport etc, but I was not able to find a match. You know how the hardware stores have a screw guide panel where you can try to fit the screws to find a matching profile? It didn't work for me.

If it were me, I'd try the home method of electrolysis for a couple days, then clean them up with a brush and steel wool the heads. As someone mentioned, they don't look bad at all to start with, so a little clean up should do the trick. My $0.02.

Local hardware store stock might not be the right size, probably won't be.

I advocate for metric... and for zinc plated steel... the zinc is supposed to be what's sacrificed.
If you go stainless... your bus' body will become what's sacrificed, due to the difference in electrical potential between steel/stainless steel.... galvanic corrosion.

Here's after a little time of installing a stainless bolt upgrade kit... money well spent?... no

But wait... that ^^ was stainless steel + steel... what about stainless & aluminum?
Here's stainless screw in aluminum:

Ideally, stay in the "A" or "AD" box:

2. (20) attaching outer frame to the body.
3. (eight) attaching the tan inner window frame.

Accurately measure length/width for each type of screw. Don't worry about measuring the thread pitch.

Click blue text / links, below

1. DIN 7971C

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

2. DIN 7981C

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

3. These may be 7971C, but might have to look for a certain manufacturer.
Google "DIN 7971" (not 7971C) & check out the "images" view.
These have a slightly taller / squarer sided head, like a cheesehead.

Category: Curtain Rod
4. Screws that attaches curtain rods to the body. Same DIN as #1, check size.

These look pretty darn choice... I'd keep using them.

If you put together a correct looking metric zinc kit... I'd buy.

Easy e - Thank you for the information. I did not know about the fact that stainless steel can impact the corrosion properties of the base metal. Very insightful.

Regarding the Threads Per Inch (Pitch) and diameter:

I think the diameter of the shaft is important otherwise you have to modify the holes etc.
since these are screws not bolts, I can see Pitch might not being an issue.

Good point. Attaining screw snug fit in the aluminum is desired. Going to a larger US size would do it... or, better yet... slightly smash / deform each hole in the aluminum (where the screw goes though)... & it'll provide some more good snug-ness at reassembly time. I think I remember BarryL recommending that.

Thanks for the reply.
the pictures show few examples of the screws I took out. I have 5 windows, that is 190 screws (38 for each window), at least 20 of them are in bad shape, I don't want to reinstall those.

Option -1: Find replacement Original used screws for the missing once and clean them as some of you suggested or
Option -2: Buy new complete set that match the profile closely.

I do not wish to miss match old and new, that does not look good.

I find most screws I need at Home Depot. They have a wide selection of standard, metric, stainless, zink & others. Just bring in a couple examples and start comparing.

United Fastener should have what you need or be able to get it if you go with Option - 2. http://www.unitedfastenersandiego.com/About-Us
