Hey all,
For the most part my '71 super has been running pretty good over the past year, though I know my seals are bad, or just non existent. I plan this winter to make a first attempt at removing the engine, cleaning up all the grease/oil/gunk and replacing the gaskets. Just wondering if this kit has all the seals I need for the engine, or if it has more than I need. Also, if this kit is correct for the transmission. Also, any tips for removing the engine would be awesome! I have some books and I will watch some videos.
Thanks! |

https://www.jbugs.com/product/111198007AF.html should cover you for the engine.
Be well aware that there may be other items that you will want to deal with while the engine is out; these can include clutch disc, rear transmission mounts, front and rear engine compartment rubber seals, adding hose clamp to the front side of the accelerator tube that goes through the fan shroud, lubing the clutch cable wingnut threads, generator brush replacement, maybe even replacing the starter bushing..... _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Engine yes, if you take the carburetor off you will need a separate kit or at least a base gasket. For the muffler you will need a muffler install kit and tail pipe kit.
If you take the engine apart to replace all those seals you might as well tear it all apart, get it checked, new bearings, rings or new piston & liner kit and have the heads R&R
Transmission will also need two flange seals and a nose cone seal or kit. Now unless you have the tools to rebuild the transmission the flange seals, input seal and nose cone seals are your options, after that you should have a shop R&R the transmission if it is leaking between the sections.
Plus all of Cussser's goodies |

many of the gasket kits only come with only 2 of the four doghouse oil cooler seals... and come with 2 type III seals which are similar shape but much thicker ....and i've seen plenty of people attempt to use them with really bad results...no way to tell from the picture and no brand given other than claiming to be german...the engine set is universal and comes with stuff for type III's, single ports and 40hp motors....so theres plenty in there you wont need...same with the trans set...the majority of the gaskets in that set are to install the axle tubes on a swing axle trans...another one in there would require you to pull the gear carrier out (as in full rebuild)....so the only 2 things i see in that picture you could use are the nose cone gasket(which usually doesnt leak) and input shaft seal....if the trans is juicy more likely it needs final drive seals which arent in that kit...get under there ahead of time and clean things up to try to see what it actually needs |
