Ive noticed a couple warning signs. Sometimes when its cold it will puff on start up. The smoke is fast and disipates before i can make out the color but i think its white. At wot 2nd gear pulls it will smoke slightly a grey smoke. Seems there is no major oil loss as i am not adding any. Should i worry?
The setup is a 1835 with aa thick walls and 050 rasser heads. Theres a back story with this engine that is probably not realivant but after 20 miles it was rebuilt a second time using a new block (found i had a bad block after i descovered the push rods were cut to short by the first builder). I switched from ratio rockers and a engle 120 cam to a engle 110 and factory rockers at that time. I switched because the new builder suggested to because it would make my engine last longer and i was on a budget and i could not afford to replace the wrecked parts. |

If you are still breaking it in, it will use/burn some oil. _________________ THE BUILD http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php

Are you using TS rings? Then maybe, but otherwise, I would expect your rings to control oil better by now, 2000 miles is quite a lot. Maybe time to start thinking about re-honing and re-ringing, but first figure out why it didn't work the first time (oil? driving style? hardware?), then fix it.
Any other clues? what are the compressions like?
Blue smoke on start up is normal every once in a while, but shouldn't happen often, and can have something to do with how you park overnight. |

like Freebug said blue smoke can happen any time. Sometimes it can be really
alot on startup. A freaking cloud.
It usually happens to me on a nice warm summer day and I park right next to Sidewalk Cafe to show off my bug. You can imagine how unhappy the diners are when the cloud hits.
