Back in the mid 60's there was virtually nothing else on the market that could hold a candle to the VW Bus in affordability and ease of repair. A lot more people than just the "foot loose, fancy free, free love, stoner crowd" could see that. My Dad for instance saw a very affordable family vehicle sitting there in the show room and I grew up in one. We were the furthest thing you will ever find from the "Hippy" movement.
My 2 best friends in high school left their studies to join the "ride your thumb movement" in '71 so the Hippy thing went well into the mid to late '70s here in Canada. |

Yeah hippies never bought these cars new! They were used, handed down, found on the road, turned into a shop as BER (beyond economical repair) and sold cheap, etc. |

I came across this just this morning on another discussion board, completely unrelated to VWs or other cars. The stereotype is still there, even in the press (and probably always will be).
