I just started getting the 56 going and realized the seats sit too high for me. Has anyone lowered their seats while retaining the ability to still slide back and forth? |

I have not lowered my seats, but I've noticed that a lot of seats get over-stuffed when people re-cover them. In vintage photos, the seats look fairly flat across the seating surface. If yours are puffed up with a rounded, pillow look, you might be sitting an inch or two higher simply because of extra stuffing in the seat. Similarly, an over-stuffed seat back might be pushing you forwards an inch or so. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle |

Yes, they have been recovered by the previous owner with extra padding. I was hoping to be able to keep the padding because it’s comfortable, but the seating position is just too high. The seat is almost 2” taller then the seats in my 66 (original seats). |

I wouldn’t mess with the seat rails...better to fix the padding
The only other way would be to cut an inch out of the seat frame and weld back together |

I was thinking of doing the same thing as I am 6'3" and if I could drop the seats about 2 to 3 inches it would be great. I did install a cheap set of recliners and it did help. A good starting point on a custom project would be a pair of seats out of a ghia as they are way lower in stock form, just find a way to adapt to a bug!! |
