i personally would not consider the 3.0 avk. while it may make nicepower and sound good it can be something of a service nightmare for the uninitiated. it has the same tendency as the 30v motors to leak. ive seen avk's misfiring because the spark plug tube was filled with oil. the factory procedure for changing the timing belt uses a variety of special tools unique to this motor. the engine management and wiring is the most complicated of the engines mentioned and also has a number of technical bulletins related to wiring harness problems/misfires etc. _________________ Reference Automotive: NW Washingtons Vanagon Specialist. Most engines use special tools to change the t-belt; I know my 12v AAH uses a couple specialty items that I keep on hand. My MB's use special tools to replace the chains, too. It's the cost of doing business with engines I like to keep around for a while. _________________ Casey--

Thanks for posting these photos. Your installation looks great. I particularly like the way you welded the engine mount brackets right to the frame rails of the van - very much the way Audi did it on older cars like the C3 100/200.
The 2.7T is definitely a version of the Audi V6 that is worth the trouble to fit into a Vanagon. (For those that don't know, the RS4 had a 380 hp version of this same engine.)
Did you have to modify the chassis crossmember that goes between the rear suspension mounting pts to make room for that Porsche transmission? Also, how much did you have to modify the bulkhead in front of the engine?

most engines use special tools? i just checked samstag and the cam clamps alone for a t-belt change are $595.00 not including the crank lock pin or the cam adjuster socket. depending on skill & experience many techs elect to not utilize every factory procedure/tool for the 2.8./2.7/3.0 timing belt change with no problems. The aah is simple enough that a first timer could proly do it w/o a cam bar and not break anything. The 3.0 is more complex and people who are looking at a potential swap and wish to follow the factory service procedure should know of the associated costs _________________ Reference Automotive: NW Washingtons Vanagon Specialist. you gotta be pretty hard up to pay Samstag prices. I bought my AAH tools off of ebay for cheap. Yeah, different engines take different tools--BFD I wouldn't opt for the 30v either, but it's not 'cause of a few piddly oil leaks or the need buy special tools. _________________ Casey--

glad you like the conversion.the bulkhead is moved about 3" and the crossmember notched and boxed.$595.00 for tools is a stupid amount of money, my timing bar is genuine audi and cost about £50 crank locking pin can be easily made by turning down an audi drive shaft bolt took about 1/4hour to make.looked at lots of engines when i did my conversions and the s4 made the most sense by the time ive finished of selling the rest of the s4 my engine will cost less than samstag change for those tools.i built this with the idea of turbo/injector upgrade in mind (chargecooling system rated at 520hp) but reduction in low end torque v more power not for me this thing will pull 6th gear from 50mph and strong from 70 by changing to k04's or hybrid's will move the power up the rev range.ok with 4wd and traction control but this thing wheelspins enough as it is. |

How did you adapt the Audi V6 to the Porsche transaxle? I'm under the impression that the V6 uses the same bellhousing configuration as the old I-5 engines, which is close, but not quite the same as the Porsche. SyncroGhia has a thread here about adapting an AAN to a Porsche box, and he's had to do some minor mods to the trans in order to get them to fit together. Just curious if you had the same issues to deal with.

So the 2.7 and 996 gear box bolt patterns are the same or is there an adapter plate? |
Yes. Porsche switched to the Audi V6/V8 pattern when the watercooled M96 series of engines debuted. It allows Audi 5/6/8 cylinder engines to be bolted to the newer Porsche transmissions with some modifications. |

Thanks for posting the pictures of the Audi 2.7T engine swap.
We have an A6 that was left at the dealership with the 2.7 after it lost a timing belt. Basically a complete parts car mechanically.
I have worked for Audi for 20 years and have plenty of experience with the v6 engine in all its variations.
Might just have to get a title for it and salvage the powerplant for a later date.
Not a Vanagon owner currently, but who knows what might come around. |

MB engines are very tall, long and heavy. Additionally, I'm not aware of any commercial engine adapters for their bellhousings, so that would need to be custom made. _________________ Casey--

Thanks for the reply. its going in a Doka so loads of room and no weight issue as its designed to carry more than the engine.
Any idea of someone to build the adaptor plate?
ive seen a youtube video where the guy uses a thick sheet of plastic so u can see where everything goes so might end up building my own if every thing else will work. like the Emerald k6 ? |

V6 , ive already been told i can remove the power steering and Aircon pumps. i can get the mounts sorted so its down to the clutch and plate conversion. then proving the K6 can control it all |
