Hello, this is my first post so I apologize in advance and appreciate any help I can get.

I recently bought a vw sand rail in not so great condition. It had been sitting for five years and I’m now trying to get it running. The clutch lever on the transmission will only move when using a cheater bar. This means the engine is always in gear and I can’t seem to get out of gear. The transmission is a type 002 3 rib from a bus.

The engine will turn with starter motor but is struggling and turning slowly and I believe this is due to it being in gear but might be an entirely separate problem.

Anyone have tips for getting it out of gear? Or getting it running in general?

Thank you

Should be pretty easy to pull the engine and fix the jammed bushings in the bell housing. I suppose if you're in a hurry you could try shooting some penetrating oil into the bushings and hope for the best

clutch cable seized up?
T/O bearing seized up?
Clutch fingers " " up?
VWs hate to sit, like any machine.
If moisture sets up, you usually have to pull the engine, pull the clutch
assembly, steel wool or some abrasive to get surface oxidation off all the
pieces. Clutch assemblies love to lock solid as they sit. No oil bath to stop
rust.

The clutch cable is now removed and the lever is still solid.
Today I am planning on pulling the engine, but the frame is causing some problems, and from there I can see how things look on the inside.

Thank you

You would need to put a 10 or 12" crescent wrench on the arm to get it to move fully.
