Decided to fully restore my 1971 Super Beetle, taking it completely apart, rewiring, repainting, and rebuilding engine.

I will be updating this thread on my progress, feel free to comment with suggestions on what I should do while it's all apart!

Ripped apart, only thing left to take off is the windows, interior panels and headliner, and the engine.

That should be a line that used to go to your "altitude adjustment module" (look inside the engine bay and see if there is a small box mounted up inside against the tar board on the left.)

All I have gathered through reading is that it was used to adjust your mixture based on whatever altitude you were at. I don't think many people run these anymore. you can keep that line on, or put on a rubber vacuum cap ensuring a good seal.

Here is a great write up on how to fix that luggage tray
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...p;start=20

From what little can be seen, your floor pans look like they're in decent shape, as well as your heater channels! That looks to be near forward of the battery tray? If it's in that good of shape there, you are probably well off on the rest of the pan.

Good luck!

pans are in great shape, just have to get all the adhesive off...

heater channels are good except for above jack points, metal there has flexed too much and caused small rusted out spots around 2 inches long above each side.

Maybe you're already doing it - suggest bag and tag EVERYTHING and keep old parts too, even if right now you know you will be replacing stuff. I also sometimes put a little note in the bag to remind me later about something in particular. Also lots of pictures, these days with cell phones it's a breeze.

Last thing you want to do is spend money on things you lost along the way.

Keep the pictures coming Laughing

Actually that was for the vacuum hose that provided intake manifold vacuum to an autostick control valve mechanism. So that driverside manifold was originally for an autostick shift Bug or Ghia.

Decided to rebuild my engine into a 1680 with think wall 88s. Anybody build one here before? would like to know what a good combustion rating would be using stock carb (not switching to duals) with a cb2280 cheater cam.

Here's what I've got going for my 1680cc:

stock 34-pict 3 carb
stock crank
stock flywheel
stock rockers
2280 cheater cam
HD lifters
88mm thickwall slip-ins p&c's
Dual Port Cylinder Head, 35 x 32mm Valves, bored to 90.5

This will be my daily, and I have been trying to figure out what my deck height and combustion chamber cc should be in order to make a good compression ratio for regular 87/91 pump gas (USA)

anybody able to shed some light on the subject? The internet has information, but translating it to my engine has proven difficult or me.

Good plan. Original CR for a '71 dual-port was 7.5:1. Although I don't see a CR recommendation for the cheater cam, I suggest keeping it in the "high 7's" to 8.0 with the single carb. May need to increase the main jet size 1 or 2 sizes.

General aim for deck height is 0.040 to 0.060". If you look at the middle value 0.050", to get an 8.0 CR you'll need to have the head chambers measure at 52cc using the engine calculator from CB: http://cbperformance.com/v/enginecalc.html

Will you be using the heads now on your engine, or buying new ones?

Are your engine internals in good shape; will you tear the engine down completely?

I'm ordering new heads since mine are mis-matched and I don't have a good machinist anywhere near me, and I have yet to tear into the case so i'm not sure what I will find. engine was running decently before it was torn down, so I'm not too worried about it.

Thanks for the info!

As long as you have the time, and before you get any further down the road on the engine assembly, have you determined whether or not the case should be (1) line bored or (2) thrust cut? They are inexpensive procedures to clean up the bearing surfaces. Search it and you will find plenty of info on it, but basically start by seeing if your fingernail catches on the color deviation in the main bearing areas.

Been a while since I last posted, has to shelf the bug for a while to deal with other projects/problems...

Since the last update, I finished rebuilding engine and reinstalled it in the rolling shell that my super had become. Attempted to fire it up and all I got was cranking, no start. Turns out I had somehow made my engine a tiny bit wider, and my new stock length pushrods were not long enough to open valves fully.

Here is a picture of the engine being installed:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And here is the car now, with the body being taken off like I should have done in the first place:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Found some heavy rust in the forward 4 left and right pan to frame bolts:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

the silver spot you see on the right hole is the sheared off bolt, which was very rusted.

As you can see, I have a lot of work to do![/img]
