Well, I just got a 74 bus, and want to pull engine due to oil leak. PO said top-end was rebuilt, and I highly suspect rear main seal the culprit.

I'm use to 1600 DP & SP engines so I'm curious if someone can "overview" the difference between the older style and the new? (beyond the description in Bentleys)

I’ll try.

The T4 is heavier. It’s built tougher. It’s way more expensive and complicated. You can change the push rod tube seals without pulling the heads so that’s easier. Some parts aren’t made anymore so you have to use 40 year old ones. They are either dual carb or fuel injected instead of single carb so that’s tougher. If by chance someone installed a single aftermarket carb it’s prone to drive ability issues like carb icing. There aren’t as many choices for things like exhaust, etc.

One of the main causes of leaks on these engine is the oil pressure switch which is pretty well hidden under the tin. Other likely leaks are the valve cover gaskets and the pushrod tubes. The distributor o-ring can also pump oil onto the top of the engine it isn't that easy to see.
