Honestly. Subaru's are pretty fast. I have a 09 Pontiac G8. That car pushes 360HP stock.
I ran across a Subi in Upstate NY a few years ago and was surprised at how damn fast that souped up Subi ran. He didn't beat me. But I didn't beat him either.

If you're looking to beat a Subi light to light. You better count on spending lot of British Pounds Sterling to get the job done. HP ain't cheap.

Contact Alstrup. That genius knows how to get the most out of aircooled engines in Europe.

Good Luck.

My suggestion is a really cool paint job.

Volkie, the only reason I don't like Subie conversions is you have to mutilate your bug.

That said they are extremely fast, the problem is you may kill yourself driving it.

I have a 2.0 916 in my bug and if it was in the 914 it came out of it could do 127 mph. My bug is much lighter and I did a lot of work on it to keep it on the road. But-- after 90 the steeriing gets light and you can easily lose control.

I am be pushing 120 hp, and my zone is between 0 and 85mph.

Sure will be fun but a lot of work and can be dangerous.

I like being able to cruise all day at 75mph and if needed more but the bug was not made for that power for the street.

A chipped Subaru STI makes about 300 whp.

A 2000 lb bug would need 182 whp to keep up.

There aren't many if any NA T1 strokers that will put out that much power.

If you turbo it you can make enough power.

Ed Zackerly....

I have a 2018 Impreza with 140hp and it's pretty quick. Just no where as quick as my Beetle with a 2180. But it's certainly slower than 2018 STi.

When Dodge reintroduced the Hemi, I was outrunning them. Haven't do it in years and I suspect the current Hemi's are much quicker.

It's very hard to beat, at a stop light, an all wheel driver car with 340hp.

An honest 180hp with close ratio trans will push a 1750lb car into the mid 12s. That’s going to hang real well.

Regardless, you would be surprised how many T1 strokers put out more than 182whp.

If you're talking from a dead stop, a ZF LSD will help.

I have one and my 60' got much lower after it was added.

ZF will help, but I bet you could still manage 1.8 60’ times on radials. That’s easily in the ball park.

You have started like 5 or 6 threads on engine selection NA and turbo. Some built for MPG, some long haul, and some hauling ass. You need to think about what you really want and how deep into your pocket you want to dig to find it.

Moderators Note: That's a bit excessive, how about just one and ask your questions there.

BTW... here's the big question... what's your budget?

And remember, you need more than an engine. You need a tranny that will hold up, suspension that will put it to the pavement and brakes when you're done.

It's not anywhere near as hard as you think to build a 220 HP N/A engine using all off the shelf store bough parts. You can very easily gut a street legal Bug down to 1500 Lbs. Add a close ratio gearbox and your whipping their ass. What it really takes is money and that is what a lot of people don't have.
