I am glad to see this thread revived. I have been considering this swap for quite a while, as I have the South African bell housing and a 12v 2.8 with all the accessories and FI system from my 93 on the floor in the garage. The deck will have to be raised, as the engine is 5 inches taller from crankshaft to top of engine than the waterboxer. That means a rework of the bed hinges(rumor is baywindow hinges will work), but if you make a flat raised platform over the engine, you can make it with cubbies in the area where the engine is not to make extra storage. The engine is heavy, I haven't weighed it, but it is much harder to wheel around on the dolly than a waterboxer. The pictures shown here show a neat and easy install(once you have an adapter or bellhousing).
The only mechanical piece I need is a flywheel and pressure plate. I purchased a dual mass flywheel a couple of years ago, but from mockup it appears too thick, and will hit the bellhousing. Does anyone know what flywheel would come closest to fitting? _________________ 1969 Deluxe, owned since 1973

Probably best bet would be to use the V6 stock transmission parts due to the fact that it will be easier to get parts going forward. Nonetheless, if you can get the 5 cylinder flywheels, then you can use these on the V6.The earlier clutch friction discs also have the same spline count that matches the stock transmission. V6 and newer are different. You will have to machine the crankshaft side of the 5 cylinder flywheel so that it clears the Audi v6 block and also find a way to fabricate a trigger pick up.FYI, the DMF will need a spacer with the SA bell housing.
I have seen a doka with the 2.8 V6 30v and it does sound great and pulls really well. Consumption isn't that bad either considering the weight and aerodynamics of it. I believe that it got about 7km/litre with very spirited driving.
I do personally prefer the 5 cylinders though which I feel pull slightly better than the v6. There is also that glorious exhaust note! only second to a big V8 |
