They are a company like JP group making parts all over the place.
The difference is the quaility of Patriot is way better than JP.
All we know is the testing results have been fantastic !

Burley lower control arm and rear trailing arm bushings "neither squeak nor transmit road vibration" - this has not been my experience, at least when following the supplied greasing instructions.

The noise is not too bad in warm weather but they make a creaking noise over every little bump in cooler weather. This temperature effect with this material bushings seems to be acknowledged in the comment about being too hard to use for the radius rod bushings particularly in cold weather.

Also, the ride quality is noticeably harsher than standard bushings on concrete roads with frequent expansion joints. I have gone back to OEM style rubber bushes on the front and am planning to do the rears sometime soon.

I contacted Burley about this problem soon after installing them and he did reply but it wasn't much help (haven't had this problem before, must be something else etc).

Wow! I mean really, wow! There is a lot of false information in that "newsletter". This isn't my thread so I will not make any further comments, but I would implore anyone reading that to take it all with a grain of salt.

I do recall having a customer service consultation with you.

That is correct, we have not had complaints / feedback or opinion reports from other customers that you have described in your posting, nor have we experienced this during our testing. In fact, we get the exact opposite. Everyone seems to be exceedingly happy after their purchases. This is why we had the temerity to post such a bold statement.

From what I can gather, based on your email and various postings on the samba, you prefer the soft ride of oem rubber, but would at the same time like to have urethane material.

BMS bushings are a little firmer than oem. They are stronger, longer-lasting and offer a more responsive driving experience. We find that our customers want stronger, longer-lasting, better handling and safety over bouncy and soft. Had we known your particular preferences / requirements prior to purchase we would have recommended that you stay with oem rubber.

We are also the only company to offer bushings with slotted grooves to specifically handle any squeaking that will always take place when you rub rubber or urethane (or any other hard material) constantly and assertively against stainless steel. All bushings experience this issue. Ours is the only bushing to do something about it. In fact, we get a lot of customers running to us to STOP the squeak from other bushings, and they find relief from this problem with our slotted, grease grooves.

We are pleased to hear you've found a comfortable ride and the satisfaction your looking for by going back to oem bushings.

We do pride ourselves in quality product and do try to please all customers.
Unfortunately, this is not always 100% possible.

I suppose we can't expect a happy response from the competition. I am sorry that you feel this way. I don't really go out of my way to upset you.

I am writing with years of experience as a German-car Master Tech and 2 Unlimited Class desert racing championships behind my knowledge. I am answering questions that people continue to ask.

It's funny that the competition provided me with better customer service and answered my queries about this issue as a stranger on this forum than you did when I contacted you directly as a customer!

Also if your urethane material is not suitable for the radius rod bushings due to the axial loading, how are they suitable for the low control arm bushings whcih also have a significant axial loading onto the forward half of the bushing, which is imposed by the radius rods?

[quote="Mellow Yellow 74"][quote="burleymotorsports"]I suppose we can't expect a happy response from the competition. I am sorry that you feel this way. I don't really go out of my way to upset you.

While BMS exerts every effort to provide excellent customer service , we admit that this is not always possible to have a favorable outcome.
Also:
I think we have established there are people that don't like the facts of our our tech article.
While we are disappointed that has happened , we also realize that there is nothing at this point we can do to change that.

However we do have literally thousands of satisfied customers who love their Burley parts and have commended us for our above and beyond customer service.

Now to something informative and to answer your questions. I will go a little more in detail than the now "controversial '' tech article that we wrote :

First of all it has been proven to me today that Urethane is not for everyone. Some people are super sensitive (ie the fairy tale about the princess and the pea) and that's ok with us but know that installing it will not make your van ride like a big fluffy couch.

There are many different compounds of urethane , the BMS blend is a proprietary formula.

Our particular compound is engineered and tested so it is not prone to flaking or splinting especially in the colder climates.

The lower control arm bushing is a pivot point the travels in a radial motion around a stainless steel sleeve axis.
There is no crushing / prying motion involved to speak of like the radius rod bushings experience (this is why we recommend using rubber oem bushings on the radius rods) therefore there is a zero failure rate of BMS LCA bushings even on the thrust area that you questioned.
The OEM rubber bushings do however have a failure rate in the area , especially on Syncro models.
The BMS bushing has a full width thrust area to make a nice contact patch against the subframe or on a 2wd the sheet metal crossbeam where the lower control arm pivot is located.
The OEM rubber bushing has a thin lip in this area , the rearward motion that the arm experiences during harsh braking conditions wears through this lip allowing the arm to rub on the subframe creating a metal to metal noisy situation. At the same time its eating up the frame of your van.
Hope that helps you understand a little more about urethane and its places to be used and not to be used.

I have ordered bushings bushings from both BMS and Chris. I got great service from both. How to tune the suspension on a vehicle is personal preference. My van has all urethane bushings and I am happy with them. My old rubber bushings were worn out so I don’t have a apples to apples comparison. Just like parts from other vendors you will get mixed reviews. Without the dedication of BMS,Chris, gowesty and others it would be very difficult to keep our old vans on the road. I appreciate all there hardwork. John

Burley, thank you for building a business that serves a relatively small group of people and serves us well. It is obvious that you’re dedicated to providing people with the highest quality parts possible and a lot of time, testing and research have gone into many of your products. There will always be someone out there that didn’t get the exact result they were epecting from a product that may or may not have been the right solution to their particular issue. Keep up the great work. Competition is the driving force for change and innovation. As 82westyrabbit said, we are lucky to have both Burley and t3 and the small handful of specialty companies dedicated to making our vans run better and longer. Thanks.

So in the newsletter you say that the bushings are the correct durometer so they don't squeak or transmit road vibration, but then you said that they are firmer than others and not for people who are sensitive (presumably to squeaking and vibration?).

And the lower control arm bushing is a pivot point that travels in a radial motion with no crushing / prying motion to speak of, but then you speak of the thrust motion that the arm experiences during harsh braking conditions.

Thanks for helping me understand a little bit more about this.

This morning I can only think of explaining my meaning of sensitive as in a fashion similar to exhibited in the fairy tale the princess and the pea.

Thrust :
During braking the force exerted pushes the arm rearward.

Hope this helps Smile

I agree 100% with you! Thanks to Burley (have ordered many items from them) and other companies, my syncro is alive and running (with some bad ass gear and parts). There is always gonna be someone who is not satisfied (and that is fine and part of business)...point being, most others are extremely happy with Burleys commitment and customer service. Keep up the great work and products! Cheers.

If spending hundreds of dollars purchasing parts and installing them in accordance with the supplied instructions, then expecting decent customer support from the vendor when they don't perform as expected makes me a princess, that's fine.

Wow. This has been an interesting week for us at BMS! Thank you to everyone who has called, emailed and ordered their way to support us...and our bushings! We have had a very good week, and we truly appreciate this awesome community of Vanagon owners.

These beasts are old and can be a tough road for many. (No pun intended.) But making the best parts I can possibly make, using untold errors and successes from over 40 years working and building and racing, is more than a job for me. It is a passion. I am proud of the quality I put out. And it makes me very happy to see how many people support what I do! Thank you!
