Took the ghia out for the first drive since I bought it. It’s been a long time since I’ve driven a mostly stock VW, i must say I’m impressed! It drove real smooth and even barely noticed riding over railroad tracks, I can’t say that for the mostly modified VW’s I’ve owned in the past.
It still needs refining, new clutch, t/o bearing, had a wheel bearing making noise, and possibly some tie rods, but overall i really enjoyed the first drive.
I can take care of this eyesore when i do the clutch

Finally installed my fuch repops and disc brake kit. Just in time to put it away for the winter and cleanup my garage it’s totally devastated.

Nice job! But it’s too shiny & way too low for my taste. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Blizzard supposed to be coming here this afternoon. Maybe I will take my Ghia out in the salty slop just to piss-off the Cali guys. |

Unfortunately rust season came early in Indiana, had to put the ghia to sleep while I work on one of my daily drivers. I’m still hoping to pull the engine this winter and get the ghia ready for non-rust season.

Well, the good news is you'll be long past on before the rust from the salt starts bubbling the paint up. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Been working on pulling the drivetrain. Figured I’d address the engine compartment paint, tidy up the engine, and need a new transmission, but i might tear into this one and see what kinda trouble i can get into. It’s got a whine but shifts good.

So much for an empty garage bay 🙄
My plan is to just degrease and replace gaskets/exhaust
And address the annoying trans. Whine, just waiting on a pinion nut tool

That last picture brings back memories... Those old engines sure are a greasy mess after 50 years aren't they? Took mine to the DIY car wash, still took a lot of scrubbing and about 4 cans of engine degreaser. _________________ My 70 beetle was totaled Now to build the Ghia I always wanted. The local DIY car washes here kinda frown on us degreasing the dirty bits in the wash bays...

My iPhone isn’t letting me organize photos correctly, so I’ll just post pictures no telling what order they’ll end up in. I made a tool out of garage door parts to press out the pinion. Then disassembled the shafts from the housing. The only bearing that didn’t feel right was the mainshaft bearing
