I took my old (non-original) steering wheel off and I am left with what is showing in the picture. The self-canceling mechanism (which you can’t really see in the picture well) seems to be functioning fine. My question is: What goes on now? I have the Grant GT wheel and the parts from the install kit. For me, the Grant instructions make little sense. What does the part look like that mates to what is showing in the picture? Many thanks..

Should be a hub adapter. _________________ 1960 Indigo Blue Ragtop (Blue Barry)

Is there some kind of pin that goes down into the self-canceling mechanism? Can’t find any info on this. |

The instructions are really basic if you get the correct kit. I’ve installed a lot of these but mostly the same few kits. Grant has a specific kit that comes with their wheels that work. The mechanism you have shouldn’t go that way. It should mount to the hub adaper kit itself separately from the wheel, then the wheel comes with hardware to bolt to the hub. The kit changes from the old 3 screw pattern to their pattern and also spaces the wheel farther out so it doesn’t hit the turn lever. |

This is my wheel and hub on my ‘63. I had issues with the newer style of horn kit so am machining a custom setup.
So to recap, you take the 3 machine screws off the back of your OG wheel and bolt the actual cancelling ring onto the back of the grant adapter kit. The wheel bolts to kit after the kit is bolted to column. The German nut to splines of shaft holds it in place along with the 3 new adapter bolts they supply. If it doesn’t work right you don’t have the right vw adapter kit or wheel. |

I really appreciate your help. Is the correct adapter the one shown with the large tab on the rear? I don’t see exactly how this tab would actuate the canceling mechanism, but maybe it does?

I’m not sure which adapter that is, but there’s only a few that work and they are used to adapt most wheels we use. You use the original ring with tab off the back of your OG wheel, nothing else. This ring mounts to the adapter and it will engage your factory turn lever.
Which grant part# did you order and who from? |

I got the wheel and adapter parts from another Samba member. It’s possible the adapter is not the correct one for my 63. |

Ok, this probably won’t make total sense but I’ll try it. Order goes...your turn switch, your OG canceling ring (seats in groove on your lever), canceling ring is now bolted to that grant 3 bolt piece that says “top” and is clocked to that position with turn switch at neutral. The large hub piece gets flipped upside down with 3 bolts going in from the top to the aluminum cast “top” piece below. The wire weaves through the hole in hub. The smaller cast cap style piece will go on before the large one I’m thinking, to cover the cast mechanism. This kit uses an extra piece that the other one I use doesn’t. The large 3 screws will go through the bottom of the large cap, small cap, then secure the cast spline piece and canceling ring. The factory spring washer and nut will go on the shaft down the inside of the large cap with 5 holes, then wheel and horn etc. Its a process to get these off but not bad. As long as you have the correct spline adapter plate and your OG canceling ring mounts up, the rest should work out. Sometimes you have to unscrew your turn signal switch screw and push down or up slightly to fine tune. |

Did you take your factory canceling ring off the back of your steering wheel and mount to the back of the splined adapter plate? |

Thanks for all the info. I think I may not have the correct canceling ring for a 63. Just ordered it and will give it a try. |
