Does anyone know if torsion leaves from a later split can be used in a barndoor beam? I'm guessing they're slightly thinner and won't work, but I can't confirm this.

If they can't be used, has anyone found an alternative solution?

Barndoor and post-barndoor front torsion bars are different in shape. Barndoor are completely square whereas post-barndoor has a more octagonal shape. Not sure if you need both upper rods and lower rods but it is thought that commercials had 4 leave bars on top and 5 leave bars on the bottom. Deluxe's had 5 & 5.

Assuming you want original running gear, you can obviously modify the post-barndoor rods or there is someone that is selling the upper torsion leaves for a barndoor (4), if interested. I assume you can run 4 on top 4 on the bottom, just the ride quality may be compromised.

I put later torsions in my Barndoor beam. Just changed out the centers and off course, used later trailing arms and spindles. My decision to go later parts was easy, since I did not have the original parts. I wanted better brakes too.

Thanks for your replies. I definitely didn't explain myself very well though...

Yes I know that the stack of torsion leaves in a barndoor beam is square in cross section, where as later split buses it's more like a + symbol.

A friend is looking to make a narrowed barndoor beam for his bus, and has bought a spare beam to avoid cutting up the original beam. Unfortunately it's a bare beam without any torsion leaves. Trying to find a full set of barndoor torsion leaves would be pretty difficult.

I was wondering if it might be possible to use the larger centre torsion leaves from a non barndoor (not the smaller outer leaves), but I don't have any barndoor leaves to measure. Has anyone compared barndoor torsion leaves to the large leaves from a later split? I suspect that barndoor leaves might be thicker than the large leaves from later buses

Hi Scotty,

I'm pretty sure it will not work with later leaves but may stand corrected! I have a barndoor beam and a later split beam laying side by side so I can take a measure later and see if they are compatible.

Also the barndoor leaves I have may be for sale Wink give me a call and I'll see if I can help Smile
Cheers
Jeff

Cheers Jeff

I think he's solved the problem by buying another beam with leaves in. I'll let you know if he still needs to sort some leaves
