Thank you all for the input.
Wiggling the terminals that attach to the body fixed everything before I had a chance to take the assembly out. I must've moved them unintentionally when f'ing around in there. A bad ground can do very strange things, so the moral of the story is "electrical oddities = bad ground".
I knew that powering the 3rd from the main brake light should work as it runs parallel. But I guess after scratching your head too long you start making up theories like "robbing of power"... _________________ If all else fails, stop using all else
