The module and trigger look like it's been overheated. To me you have a time bomb in there. For a reliable daily driver, I'd replace it. _________________ Robert in Memphis

I sent the pic to Pertronix. I compared that to the old one in the 009 I pulled out of the 2180 and the old one looks perfect. Bizarre. _________________ No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There's always a boom tomorrow. |

We have a season in Phoenix that's not summer - it's called January 15th. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I never have understood why anyone carries a spare distributor. Are you worried something will break on your installed unit?
|
On a stock type distributor, the points rub block can break off, or the condenser may fail. On a distributor with a Pertronix unit, (IMNSHO they are crap, because when they fail you are stranded). So if you carry a spare, pre-timed extra distributer, all you have to due is pop the cap off, remove the hold down nut, swap the distributors, and you are back on the road in 15 minutes. This is especially important if your VW is a DD, and or you take it on long road trips, which in both cases I do. In almost 40 years of driving theses things, I have seen many different types of failures. In my Baja, I carry an extra distributor, fuel pump, clutch and throttle cables, fan belts, and a folding army shovel. In my road VWS, its just a distributor, fan belts, and bailing wire. The bailing wire is to jury rig a broken throttle cable, and I have learned how to limp home with a broken clutch cable.
The most important concept to remember, is that everything that is man made WILL fail. The more prepared you are they least likely you will need a tow truck to get you to your destination. _________________ 69 road Bug 2110

Got a response from Pertronix:

After molding hundreds of modules at a time, towards the end of the runs they can sometimes look like this. There's nothing to be concern about. It's just a rough mold as the circuit board is deep inside. |
