Hi Bob,
It appears it is a later beam, which makes sense as discs would have had more stopping force, hence the larger diameter control arm to handle the increased force.
Here is an add I found searching for part number 311405106A (lhs upper control arm from chassis 315 000 000 on)

OK, since you have a later beam, then that should make it easier to find. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

If you look at the dates on the VZi forum, they're 8 years old. A lot of stuff has gone up since then. Also, people seem to shop on the Samba when looking for parts. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Believe it or not, I have a buddy who has a spare early beam, so we are going to pull it apart and figure out what I have. From the beam repair thread and the last ad, it appears it’s an early beam. |

Possibly, but I need to figure what beam I have first. One ad stated small diameter uppers was early, another stated it was late. Going to measure up the lower controls arm tonight. |

IIRC,
Early is smaller.
There might be an even smaller early early?
I only know,
Because I ordered these,
All stoked,
And they’re too small for my later beam.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Just to add to the confusion, the lower seals are early. Part # on the seal is 311405179 OD of 56mm. So if it uses the late (larger) upper control arms, it might because in the original ad from 2008, it states the beam was rebuilt. Wonder if you can fit late bushing in an early beam. |

Thanks to Joel, it was determined it is an early beam and the smaller diameter control arms are for later cars. |

So it's the opposite. Thanks for the info. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Not the first fire up, first was on three cylinders, cleaned up the plug wires (no metal ends in the cap side, just stripped back and wire folded over) to make sure they were making contact. Ordered a new set of plug wires, carb rebuild kit and a belt cover from ISP west today. Best part was no smoke or weird knocking sounds.

Had a half hour to kill in the garage and couple pieces of gray scotchbrite, so I started after the clear runs on the poorly repainted front fenders....

Well, at least you know WHY they repainted the front fenders (at least that one shown).
So, is the "black run" in the pic a run? Or rust? _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Some rust. I will take care of it and have the paint matched. |

That’s if I can focus and get the front end rebuilt! Sanding the fenders was the last thing on my list...but killing time making sure the infloor heat is working made it the easiest choice. |

Here is a short video of the control arm conundrum.

Soon to be rectified with the correct early control arm thanks to Joel. |
