While replacing the rear wheel cylinders on my 1960 bug, I also changed the metal lines between wheel cylinder and flex hose. The old steel line still had the tag on it showing it as a 3/16 European line. I was puzzled by it not being metric size. Brakes worked ok with no leakage at the connections. Any insights on this?

I should think being from internet days , it is safe to say it is not original. _________________ "Albatross"! |

Lol. The “Sarnia, Ontario” was another subtle clue. I did measure the thread pitch and it was 1.0 mm as original. The bubble flare seems to be like original. Only difference was that the 3/16 non-original fitting is longer so that when fully tightened there are 4 threads still exposed. No leaks though. _________________ 1960 beetle

Another clue is that in Europe they don't call it "European brake line," they just call it "brake line." _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

I've gotten lines like that off the shelf from my local parts place.
No problem using them but as you said, the ends were a little weird (long).
When I've done that it was sort of an emergency situation, like once a wrench slipped and it broke the metal line.
Where am I going to get a line at 9PM at night when there's a show the next morning?
I replaced them later with normal VW metric lines from a VW parts place. _________________ How to Post Photos
