Hi,
I have just required a 1965 vw beetle. It has been converted to 12 volts.
My turn signals are very intermittent ,especially at idle. It does not have a 4 way emergency switch. Any ideas ? Relay ? Switch ? bad ground ? I see there are a number of different relays out there I am wondering if I have the correct one installed.

Intermittent is typically a funky connection.

I don't think '65 came with a turn signal relay. Are you referring to the flasher?

Pics of your wiring in the trunk would help.

If it's both sides, then you are looking at a common point AND if anything else is intermittent. If mutliple circuits on a common fuse, look at corrosion or dirty at the fuse and fuse box tabs for that fuse.

If only the turn signals, then trace from the fuse box to the switch, flasher and any associated ground. Could be a dirty switch as well. Have that issue with one of my cars when I take it out of winter storage. Have to pull the wheel and spray contact cleaner into the switch contacts.

When you say intermittent, do the turn signals light up when turn signal lever is on but do not flash or do they not light up at all?

Depending on the relay style, since some are grounded through their mounting stud or clip, that can sometimes become intermittent. Since it isn't a "wire", many overlook this.

HI Again,
when the turn signals stop flashing ,the only light on is the one in the instrument cluster, it's on but not flashing. I took a couple of photos and it looks like a cluster f**k

What is that thing in-line on the ground wire for the flasher relay?

It's a bulb ,why it's there is beyond me. I just bought a EP35 Relay and I am going to rewire it without the bulb.I told you it's a cluster F**K

I thought it looked like a bulb but I have no idea why you'd want one there either.

Who doesn't like installing a load inline with the ground wire for a circuit? How else would you so easily increase resistance and choke the power flow?

Problem solved with removing the bulb and wire ( although it looked like it went to ground it was not grounded) installed new EP 35 relay and rewired to a real ground. As soon as I looked at the photo ,i realized that ground wire was screwed up, but what i can't understand why it could even work at all.

I thought that looked dodgy. Glad you got it sorted.
