Well, I discovered last night that one of the plastic nipples on the right side fuel evap tank has broken off. The rest of the tank is OK. The part that's broken off has been lost. Is there any way to repair those tanks that'll hold up to fuel vapors?

@dobryan, yep...it's one of the nipples on the bottom edge. There's a little bit of the original left, but not enough to have the hose and clamp stay in position.

I seem to remember a topic where someone made a 'new' nipple from some type of fitting but my search foo is weak this morning and I could not find it.

@ dobryan, I would think that with all the plastic evap tanks ( not just for Vanagons) that someone has a way of repairing them.

@shagginwagon83, Thanks! I'll contact them and see if they have a right side. BTW...someone on Craigslist in Copperhill, TN is advertising VW parts. They've got a few pictures of cars, and there's a few Vanagons in the mix. I'm going to contact them to see if they have some things I'm looking for.

Although this is a thread more related to the tank itself, I think you are looking for something like this "permanent fix", for the evap's. I'm guessing there is a sealant goop that would withstand fuel and vapors. [those tanks get fuel in them sometimes too you know]

There are 2 tanks, probably overkill, but you should be able to loop the r/s with a piece of hose and bypass one tank safely. Go easy on the neck filling.

I've never seen it myself, but I've read of folks who fill a tank on a cool morning, from a cool underground gas station tank, and when temps come up in the afternoon, they see both expansion tanks about half full of liquid fuel. I guess you'd want to remember that sort of thing if you were using only one. I guess just don't fill it full?

While they are reparable the cost will exceed that of a good used tank. If you are determined to fix it buy a nipple that is threaded on one end can be inserted from inside the tank and fixed in place with a nut. Permatex makes a kit for about $10 that includes an appropriate adhesive for sealing the new nipple. Or buy a plastic nipple and fix it into place with the above adhesive. Cost for the primer and adhesive will run about $15-17.

I gave my evap tanks away when I converted to diesel, so they're out there.

Casey, I could be wrong, but I think our 82 factory diesel still has the expansion tanks. The syncro I am building does not, but seems it would benefit from one.

Yep, Bentley shows them, but I don't think they're necessary. I ran tank breather lines up into the pillars on both sides. No vacuum or pressure problems since. None of my MB diesels have had evaporator tanks.

just push a hot brass nipple of the same size into the plastic and snot it up with Seal All or JB Weld.

An aside here... but I had broken the nipple on one of my rollover valve, or float valve, the day this post went up. After exploring some rarely used vocabulary with myself (thinking this has to be NLA), I held the broken nipple to the valve with some Gorilla Tape and then buried it in two-part 2,000 lb epoxy. Came in the house thinking that one day I will be someone else's "prior owner" when they unearth that mess. Flipped open the computer saw this post, ran "rollover valve Vanagon" on google, and ordered a brand new one with another grommet. Two days from now it will arrive in the mail and I will no longer be "that guy" and will be sleeping better thinking of my disciplined Vanagon build. Lol.

Thank you for the search term Zeitgeist. Smile

I'm going to try the repair method with the brass nipple and see if it's successful.
