Looks like a radar set up. But were radar detectors that compact back then? _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

No, they weren't. The actual radar unit was quite large back then and was placed close the car, usually on a tripod. Like the size of a large kitchen garbage can. It would be out of the picture here, or may have been placed next to another car slightly up the road. If you zoom in on the instrument on the roof rack, it goes up to 90, which is most likely a 90 lkm/h speed indicator used for inner city or outskirts traffic speed enforcement. Speed at top of the dial is 50, which is/was the predominant speed limit within German city and town. The passing motorist would see what speed he was measured at.
The officer is holding up a warning wand, known in German as a "Kelle". If an officer waves the wand at a passing car due to his discretion if the driver was going too fast, the car is obligated to pull over and stop. The wand has no mechanical or electronic devices in it. The center is a red reflector so that it is seen at night by the passing car's headlights. |

These photos make me nostalgic for europe back in the day, When Europe was Europe, and not a conglomerate of the American/Asia/Middleeast influence and people, tourist busses, cellphones and dress, wardrobe all being the same. In other words when times were simple and real. Sorry just ranting
No country for old men I guess

A brief detour off-topic due to the comment above:
We've been visiting Spain since the mid-1980's, and we can see the drastic change even in that short time.
In the 1980's, Las Ramblas in Barcelona was a wonderful assortment of flower stalls, pet stores, book stores, art stores and various other vendors located in zones on the central promenade, depending on which part of the promedade you were in.
Today, the cruise ships discharge thousands of visitors each morning, who flood the Ramblas among other areas, and all the stores on Las Ramblas have disappeared, replaced by bars, restaurants and souvenir stands.
On the other hand, when we first arrived in Madrid in 1986, due to the Spanish custom, it was the time of day when all the stores were open but all the restaurants were closed (roughly mid-day). The only restaurant that was open when we were looking to eat, was a McDonald's! That is rarely the case any more today. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

BTW, thanks for the very thorough answer. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society
