We have all the parts sandblasted then spray with PPG DP Epoxy primer. If we are building a 100 percent show car the parts are then sprayed with a PPG primer/surfacer so they car be sanded to remove any imperfections and painted with a single stage black with a flattener to the correct gloss level. On your own with Por 15. Powdercoat is OK but whatever shape the parts are in will still be there. I have had to remove a lot of flaking powder because of poor prep. I guess "How nice do you want it". |

I'm going for a pan off restoration, with the intention of driving this car daily... So doesn't necessarily have to be "show quality".
I can easily have all the parts sand blasted. I could have them sprayed with single stage paint, or whatever is best. Just looking for a long lasting durable finish.
So with that in mind, what product would you suggest to use on the pans and suspension pieces? _________________ 1973 Thing 1600 T181

Brought the pan to be welded. (A couple cracks to deal with, and jack points).
After that, off to be sandblasted/powdercoated or painted (still undecided).
Then the building starts.

Lately I have been taking the suspension apart and getting ready for blasting and powdercoating.
Noticed some wear on one of the trailing arms:

So I have all of the pieces back from the powder coaters now.
I'm going to go get the new ball joints pressed in... But was wondering if I should paint the inside of the control arm beforehand... Or does it matter?

I would not paint inside of control arms where balljoints press in. These tight tolerances. paint will interfere with full press. never seen any painted.
as far as beam end of arms, these will be coated in grease. no need
you will be fine with what you have done with arms. |

Well... after a few years break... I’m back to building.
I just got the pan back from the powdercoaters.
I can’t seem to find any info on this...
The inside of the rear torsion housing was blasted clean... and then plugged during powder coating.
Should I coat the inside with anything?

Alright!
Took the balljoints to be pressed in.
First shop I took it to had problems... they were trying to seat the ball joint... put the control arm in a vise and must have been hitting the ball joint with something.
I then took them to a machinist... who got the job done in no time.
The first shop scrapped up the control arm... and also pushed in the top of the balljoint...
Think this might be an issue?

Installed the torsion leafs/control arms and beam to the pan today.

Get a can of "GIBBS" and spray it down real good.

Moving on to purchasing gaskets and seals...
Also looking at wiring options.
I can’t seem to find any information about the possibility of extending a beetle harness...
All of the Thing specific options are in the USA and after exchange rate and shipping... it gets really expensive.
Has anyone used a ghia or beetle harness with success?

I'm planning using to use rebel wire for my build. I've heard nothing but good things about their products.
I believe someone here on the Thing forum used them too. You may have to extend a couple of wires though.
