No air filter box (PO removed FI and installed dual carbs), so where should I connect the top outlet of the charcoal canister?

From Ratwell - http://www.ratwell.com/technical/VacuumHoses.html#canister

1978-1979 (mounted behind battery):

Big hose top - goes to air filter box above EEC valve
Small hose top - goes to fuel tank breather lines which lead to gas tank
Big hose bottom - goes to hole on tin just behind alternator

Install this in one of the air cleaner lids: http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Universal-Crankcase-Ventilation-Fitting-for-Filter-p/00-8998-0.htm

Maybe get 2 since your next question will likely involve the crankcase breather Wink

that must be rated for oil and fuel, otherwise it is a local hardware store part?

And, you’re correct busdaddy. My crankcase breather hose is just routed through the engine tin and hanging out underneath.
