I just got a *new* battery, and found out it is about 15mm (3/4") too TALL. The engine cover 'almost' closes, but not quite.
Is there any way I can make this work? What about cutting off the inside padding on the engine lid where the battery terminals are protruding too high? I could glue a piece of thin rubber to the under side of the lid to prevent the battery from shorting thru the metal lid.
...Or I guess I don't need to have the lid completely closed (but then that would mean more noise....... (??)

Return the battery and get one that fits. You do not want to mess around with a potential battery short in the future.

Sounds like you need another new battery to me! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but why would you modify your van for the wrong battery? Just saying...

The battery is an 8" tall better (not including terminals)... does a Vanagon useually take a 7" battery?

This battery is actually on 1/2 too tall... the highest point on the engine is only 1/2 lower than this battery.

What is the model / group size of the battery you have?

What was on the old one?

Not cheap, but my battery charger is set for the AGM battery I use for camping. Because it will charge up to 3 batteries at one time, I opted for an AGM battery for a starting battery. This one fits really well in the diesel tray in the engine bay.

It probably lists the dimensions in the description if that helps.

Does anyone know the correct GROUP SIZE for T3 early diesels?

Is the GROUP SIZE different for WBX engines?

This is the first time in my life I've heard about "group" sizes. But yes a 41 would fit.

Yes, the Group 41 fits the diesels. I think 40R is a close alternative found in some stores around me as 41 seems to be slowly fading away.

if you have an interstate store near you, they have the group 41, if they don't have one, they will get one, that's where i buy batteries for my customers.

Yeah I know - - - - possible it might be junk.
In fact I will probably PASS on this battery because I don't have a great feeling about the seller. I think when buying an unknown used battery, the only thing you have to go on is your 'feeling' about the integrity of the seller.

For example when czrzyvanman came to visit us 2 years ago he left with me a BOSCH battery which looked brand new - but Mark said it was fried due to using it to power his fridge. Couldn't hold a charge well anymore - but it looks GREAT.

PS--- hmmmm - maybe I should sell it to some Czech sucker Very Happy

Ed, Please buy a new battery from a known vendor with a warranty. You'll be glad you did.
