It all depends on who built it and how they put it together. It was a kit build, no two are the same. Take the screen off to save weight and possible damage, undo any cables and wiring from under the dash then undo whatever screws, bolts or rivets that are holding the hood to the tub. Remove the headlights and gas cap by whatever holds them on then lift it off.

It is impossible to speculate on how the builder put it together. You are going to have to stick your head up under there and take a look.

Mine isn't a californian clipper, but the steering column went through a hole in the dashboard, so that needed to come out first too

Thanks for all the replies people looks like I just got to go old fashioned I thought I'd be able to cheat a little bit with some visual cues the screws are so Rusty I'm having to drill out and punch through so when I reattach the hood I'm going to have to make new attachment points anyway and same with the gas cap screws are going to have to be chiseled off

How were you able to loosen the hose clamp for the filler neck? Could you see it and reach it from under the dash?

If you're asking me I didn't I just Twisted the gas cap back and forth after I cut the heads of the bolt. It was snug but it did come out

I like having the hood separate from the dash for service-ability. I plan to separate them for my Glitterbug. But then, I plan to make a panel to separate the "trunk" from the cockpit too. It might be a good idea to add a fiberglass lip to the back edge of the hood so it overlaps the edge of the dash going back together.

I'm also planning to NOT have the gas cap exposed. Maybe cut a small gas cap door and hinge it with a cable latch and a spring to pop it open. Maybe even a late Bug gas tank with a side filler door from the Bug fitted into the back corner of the hood? Gotta look into that.
