I remember that when I was restoring my 1963 camper, its tray looked the same as the trays for my 1957 bus and my two 1958 buses. |

Changed around the same time as the speedo pod, i.e 61. If Campys 63 was the same as his 58 then the 63 had the wrong tray.
Hope this helps |

thin lip to thick lip in mid '61. the speedo pod also had a bigger cutaway for the parcel tray, and eventually became more rounded around the speedo.
somebody with progressive refinements will be able to pinpoint these dates. _________________ drive it. break it. fix it. repeat. |

What year did the backside drop down. I assume it was for wiper motor clearance. Was it 65? _________________ If you`re going to do something, do it right. |

I know that '66 and '67 buses take the later tray. I think that '65 takes the earlier one. _________________ .

Cool, thats what I was thinking actually. I`ve never owned a Bus newer than 64 and my Panel came to unassembled (Wiper motor out). _________________ If you`re going to do something, do it right. |

I have a June 12 61 bus with a thick lipped parcel tray and pointy speedo pod.
The tray changed from thin lip to thick lip a couple months before my bus was built, but I can't nail it down any closer than that.
Clara has an April 61 bus and I think hers is thick lip as well. _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

According to VW the pod and tray changed on April 11,1961
however, the pointy pod tray was in use later. for a few months, perhaps.
The tray was changed somewhat earlier (not sure exactly when)

A 63 or 65 definately takes the later tray |

Is there a FAQ thread (I couldn't spot it!) about under dash trays or "shelves"? If not, there should be! The thread ought to discuss the various year modifications to the shelves, knicknames for trays/shelves, the vinyl liners on certain models, and correct fasteners. There are probably more minutia that also needs to go here, so everyone feel free to pile on!
I think that when they changed from the "thin" lip to the "fat" lip tray in 1961 the trays were no longer held to the front of the Bus by five (5) dome-headed Phillips head machine screws. The "fat" lip trays were now held on by only three of those screws plus bolt hardware and a bracket to the steering column. Also, around 1966 ? the top edge of the vertical wall of the tray dipped down in the center of the tray approximately 27mm or so to add clearance for the late 6 volt and 12 volt cannister style wiper motors.
Come on moderators! If this isn't already a FAQ sticky, please make it so!

Okay so my August 1960 has the pointy corners on the speedo pod but looks like a fat lipped dash tray, question is whilst it looks original should it be thin lipped?

Hey there. I bought this tray as a gift for my buddies 59 panel. Looking at these pictures I’m still not sure what I have, I know a 59 used the thin lip style.
Will the later fat lip trays mount up OK to a 59? Thank you. Sorry for the horrible pictures. I can take more photos if needed

Question since this thread doesn't exactly state it:
Where all fat-lip parcel trays the same until the end of split-window production?
I just purchased a '67 project that is missing a fair amount of parts and the parcel tray is one of them. It appears that fat-lip parcel trays are the same from late 61-67?
Were they are changes to the 66-67 parcel trays to clear the different style wiper assembly?
Just wanted to confirm.
Thanks! |

No, not all fat lipped parcel trays are the same.
Early fat lip trays had a flat top
April 61-65: from the gallery, ignore the red arrow
66-67 fat lipped trays had a dip in the top, possibly to allow the 66-67 wiper motor to fit. Hope this pics helps. It's my 66 kombi.
Thin lipped trays were used until ~March 1961
Fat lip trays were used from ~ April 61
The notch in the speedo pod fits the parcel tray.
Here is a fat lip tray in a bus that came with a thin lip tray:
