|

Hey all, a recent event has indicated how important it may be to get the VIN of any car you get an engine out of for a conversion
Subaru just recalled 400,000 cars for valve springs that break and take out the engine. Recalls pertaining the engine are extremely rare, and we tend to use engines that have been in use so long that all faults are known and therefore take steps to minimize the potential problems. While this one is likely an exception, it is still an eye opener.
"Subaru models including the Forester, Impreza, and BRZ, manufactured between January 2012 and September 2013, are included in the recall. Also included are the Subaru-manufactured Toyota 86 sports cars, called the Scion FR-S during the years included in the recall, according to Newsweek.
Valve springs keep engine valves closed during the fuel combustion process. Subaru has said repairs on the valves could take over 12 hours per vehicle. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

had the VIN question asked while ordering engine parts before.. so yes, record and remember what the donor is/was if at all possible.. there are often mid year model changes to components including engines.
it's usually important when doing a swap to have the original VIN logged and engraved someplace
like ECUs I tend to sharpie the vehicle year/model/VIN then cover with a piece of packing tape. _________________

I'm guessing that the OP was thinking that if you had the VIN you would know if you had bad parts in your engine so you could have them replaced.
I know that the factory would not touch the transplant for warranty/recall work. |

Absolutely correct! I didn't state it, but yes for this particular recall it would be for the owner (not Subaru) to replace those springs, since catastrophic failure that will take out the engine, or at least that one cylinder.

Good idea Dan! (you always have good ideas!) I have a photo of my donor's VIN # - I really need to "etch it" into the van!
(off to search 5,000+ photo's on the phone since I did not put in my VIN album with the other 6 cars... ) _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

Meanwhile -applying, I think to VW 1.8T - NAPA water pump failure that takes out timing belt, and therefore the engine. I like how it says that NAPA will contact the owners-like if they know!
Recall Number: 14E007000
Recall Date: 03/07/2014
Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
Summary: The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have 'US9377' stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail.
Consequence
A failure of the timing belt may cause the engine to shut down, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
What Owners Should Do
Gates will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump, free of charge. The recall began during May 2014. Owners may contact The Gates Corporation at 1-303-744-1911. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"
