I have my van in the shop. Smoking badly and low compression (40lbs) on one cylinder. It was running fine but I took a short trip and it started smoking and went through 2 quarts of oil in a couple hundred miles. They can't find the parts or a short block to do a rebuild. Does any one know where I can find what I need?

I have one but shipping would probably eat you alive.

Have they already torn the engine down and determined whether it's rebuildable?

A shop that can’t find parts? Seriously?

It should be rebuildable. It still runs ok but smokes a fair amount.

From what they've said parts to rebuild the Eurovan 5cyl have dried up. I hope someone can prove them wrong.

Their preferred parts suppliers (IMC, WorldPac, Altrom, etc.) might not have them readily, but they're definitely out there. You're probably looking at boring the block oversize and then getting a set of oversize pistons/rings, a gasket set and main bearings. Those engines are dirt simple and very tough.

That sounds like somebody who doesn't want the job. I've got a spare engine as well.
If you're interested.

Has the shop determined why there is very low compression on the one cylinder?

Here is a set of KS pistons:

I went through the same thing recently. I blew out a piston ring and needed a rebuild. I had previously put an ACU engine in my van even though it originally had an AAF. Finding quality pistons was difficult. I ended up ordering my ACU pistons from Germany. However, CdnVWJunkie sent you a link to some nice ones. Vanagain.com is the same vendor that is selling those pistons here on the Samba: http://www.qualitygermanautoparts.com/index.php?p=p1360173785

The parts I found were hard to find are specific to the '95-96 ACU engine, specifically, the emissions system. All the other engine parts seem easy enough to source from known vendors. I would hit up some of the people that said they have one. You can also try Quality German Auto if you like one of their engines and think you'll have it up and running within their 3-month warranty period: http://www.qualitygermanautoparts.com/index.php?p=p1360173785

Also, Slavik (another Samba member and Ebay seller) lives in your area and is a known rebuilder for these 2.5 engines. You may want to contact him for your rebuild. I hope this helps.

So to all the people out there that are of the opinion that 2.5L parts are easy to find, I need a crankshaft sensor for an AAF engine. Can anyone find one???

Hi speakerdesign,

Did you get the engine rebuilt? If so did you use qualitygermanautoparts.com?
Please let me know your experience if you used them. Or for that matter who you use for the rebuild. I am in a very similar situation right now with my 1995 EuroVan and can use some adivce.

Best, Daniel

Volvo and Audi did use the same engine . Depending on the parts ( internal / external ) they might be identical with a different part number.
