I was sent the wrong carpet kit, one that was cut for a passenger foot rest. I decided, since my car isn’t a restoration, to go ahead and use it by installing a foot rest.
I looked around for one in the classifieds only to see some that I wasn’t sure was for a Ghia, some were rusty and the prices were a bit more than I wanted to pay. I even found a few at show, but couldn’t tell if they were Ghia.
I decided to make my own since I had some time and materials.
I started off making a template by tracing the carpet shape on cardboard and then mocking it up inplace, making adjustments along the way. Once I found a shape I liked... transfered it to sheetmetal. The piece of metal I had was very thick for the job... so this plate turned out very strong... I think it was 16 gauge.
I did a little shaping with some angles made to the width of the plate by clamping it over my bench and some hammering.
I kept doing test fits and adding more shape until it fit the footwell to my liking.
Then it was on to do some bead rolling... the panel was already strong, but who doesn’t like bead rolling? It’s cool to do😁
I just kinda eyeballed what I thought was cool, something that mimicked an original style...
One last check for fit....
Looks good to me... I’ll place a few small mounting screws to the fire wall to hold it in place along with a good coat of paint.
My low light is not an original style car, but I’m doing all my work with mindfulness of it being able to be returned to OE condition if wanted. |

Looks awesome.
I'm just jealous that you have access to the equipment to make stuff like this.

I bought the roller from Woodwardfab a few years ago and made the stand, kinda a little after I really needed one to make panels for my Ghia.
I’m gonna remake my battery tray area in the engine compartment soon. The one I made before is ok, but I’m a little better in skill and have the roller to put the recess in for the battery. |
