You need a decklid spring that fits '56 through '64, part number 111827331A.

Any idea why it's missing? I ask because they sometimes get removed when the welds for the mount on the decklid go bad.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox.

Well, when you see such a nice car, it's hard to imagine that someone just left it off.

My own 62 is a rather nice car but at one point I had to have the original decklid rewelded due to this issue. Many years later, I put on a convertible decklid and IT is getting close to needing the same - I've thought about removing the spring.

Thank you for all the replys. There was a new one included with the car. I installed it on the car and the lid started making a loud noise when opening. I checked the lid and sure enough it was breaking the metal where it attaches to the lid. I went to Bug jam in Pasco this weekend to look at other spring mounts. The spring is correct but now I need to have the inside of the lid reinforced and welded. The car is very nice other than the cracked lid. At first I thought maybe there was a lighter spring but now it seems to have been a broken lid mount.

My '59 Euro Beetle came to me without a rear lid spring. Instead, it had a "T" shaped thing about six inches long that held the lid open without the tension of a spring, or the potential for damage. It fit into the same place the spring would have been mounted. There are rubber caps on the ends to prevent scratching. It works great. The only problem is when someone else tries to close the lid and forgets to remove the "T" holder.

Do you think it was an aftermarket item? Great quick fix until the lid gets welded.

It might have been sold in the aftermarket but I don't remember ever seeing such. I've seen many variations on such over the years - many of them just a long #2 Phillips screwdriver.
