I have a 65 1500 type 2 early bus case that came with a beat up dune buggy I bought for $600.

When I opened up the case, the crank shaft was completely sheared. I got a type 2 crankshaft and new bearings and realize I have about 1/4" play in the axial direction.

Does this mean that my case is screwed or can this be fixed?

Thank you,

Probably better placed in the performance/engine forum but sounds like you will need the case thrust cut. As someone who has used a 1500 case and gone through this, I would probably suggest looking for another case.

Depends.. on a lot of factors..
Is the flywheel attached? The flywheel and shims are how thrust is set..

Did you check bearing to case fit ?
Did you measure for an oversize case and "line boring".
Did you check the thrust bearing surface for milling?

WAY too many variables when it comes to old antique VW engines just to assume .
The case can have line boring. . no thrust milling.. no line boring with thrust milling, both milled.. none milled. Worn out, overheated, warped.. you name it..

Measure.. re measure.. inspect and re inspect.. get a good VW engine repair book.. and read it .. twice
