I asked because I was looking at an Audi 01E, and it appears to have a steel section at this junction in an otherwise all aluminum trans. It seems like a reasonable and mostly permanent solution to the problems that necessitated this approach in the first place. It was just a thought and not a criticism. _________________ Casey--

Steel as a material was discussed and rejected. It was decided that should these carrier housings ever need resleeving, it would be with a steel sleeve.
There will likely be a steel plate insert in the billet main housing, where it actually could make a difference in strength (pretty much like early 915 Porsche main housings). _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

Yeah, I don't think they could afford to mass produce billet steel. The 01E enjoys a solid reputation for handling high torque outputs, which I suspect is in part due to the choice to use a stronger metal in that section. I'm guessing gears' new billet sections will go a long way to overcoming some of the inherent weaknesses in the 09X design. _________________ Casey--

Howdy Paul!
I stumbled on this, as your other posts. Amazing work!
I just bought a donor syncro for my 2wd project last week, so fun times ahead!
Plan to buy all the strength goodies from you in time, so my TDI hightop doesn’t kill the tranny
Looking forward to that housing you shipped today! First step in Syncro tranny fixings!
Thanks again! _________________ -Will

We're very close to having a new & improved billet carrier from a reliable manufacturer. (Got stung by the previous guy .. another hard lesson learned.)
Our new prototype:
Oil inlet detail:
The final version won't be quite so whittled, but my manufacturer wanted to demonstrate how much weight could be removed. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

Thank you ..
As Syncro parts become NLA (like this low intermediate gear), we'll have them made in limited quantities.

Very nice.
I bet everyone would like the oil fill hole on the driver’s side. _________________

With all of the external stuff we add, even the 2nd oiling hole is obscured on my Van ;^) _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

I'm just kinda joking saying this, but with all this beautiful new shiney metal the new owner should get their name engraved in it and "gears" definitely have his engraved in it! _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

But on all vans its obscured by the shifter.
I think most people would welcome it moved to the left.
(If changes are still feasible)
Especially those who have over-engined.
For those upping their gearbox maintenance levels (accordingly!), it just adds “ease” to the task.
OEM fellers be jealous!🤙🏽🤙🏽 _________________

Was it a recent purchase, from where?
I bought mine many years ago when the stocks were drying out.
Derek Drew had a stock I recall, maybe I got it from him or Weddle, I forgot. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

Weddle. Like you I bought it many years ago along with aluminum bell-housing and case. The only bit I didn't buy was the low gear housing and I'm kicking myself for not spending the money!

That is a thing of beauty!
I saw the original billet carrier just recently and thought that was good, but this is next level.
