I need to replace the door corners like you did here, any tips on doing that without warping the whole door skin?

Go slow and keep it cool. I use a wet rag and/or air after each tack. _________________ David S |

Here's some work on the rear clip. It didn't need too much.

I had put the word out for a donor section to repair the area between the fuel tank and dash and my friend Kris turned one up. At the same time I started asking around for a right front quarter piece. I really did't foresee how rough that right quarter was before stripping. It's damaged, thin and had a bunch of old brass repairs. Plus more damage and braze where it meets the cowl. I was able to find a good complete quarter thanks to B.J.(westernauto) down in Yuma.
While I try hard not to go backwards, with the damage I was dealing with and now a good complete donor quarter, it made more sense to replace the whole thing and would make for a cleaner repair. I got the parts rough fit and sent off for stripping.

Started the hood repair. Not sure why both the inner and outer had been cut and welded back in before?

Finishing up some work on the front quarters... I made the pre '49 modifications to the right quarter panel and added back the pieces around the fuel tank.

The front fenders are back from being stripped... Unfortunately, the left fender was too far gone to repair. I was a able to find a nice early oval fender. I got it fit, welded and ready to go back for stripping. I body worked and primed the right fender.

Looking great.
You might want to read this thread about the differences between split and later front fenders. There are quite a few differences between the two. Having one split fender and one oval fender might be noticeable if you know what you are looking for.

What differences are you referring to? I compared headlight buckets, running board flare, took multiple measurements and found no differences. I remember running into that thread years ago and reading the wheel opening changed from split to oval, but I didn't agree with it then. Later on in that thread it seems to be confirmed the change was more like '58/'59 which makes more sense to me. _________________ David S |

That's interesting Mika. This car must be later than that. One difference I did notice though is the headlight bucket to fender gap... The bucket is pushed up against the fender leaving no gap like a later fender. I'm guessing these early cars take no fender to headlight seal? When I got the donor fender back from being stripped, I removed the bucket and reinstalled it to match the other fender. I also added the missing tube and changed the weld nut. Then finished bodywork and primed it...

Ive compared a handful of OG split fenders to EARLY oval fenders and they are the same shape.
as the years went on, the shape at the running board got less and less pronounced, but it is not something that changed overnight. _________________ drive your split. |
