Hey all,
Trying to mount a dash speaker in my 73. From searching the forum I found that a 4x8 would fit the center and that retrosound would give me dual channel in that speaker.
So that's what I did, 4x8 retrosound and obviously it doesn't fit. So how do you guys do it? Only way I see it is cutting the oval shape into the dash to get it recessed enough to mount. Dont want to cut though. Also if I do the speaker will then hit the ash tray assembly.
So how do you guys mount these 4x8's??

The stock speaker mounts from below the metal dash, I think. |

^^^^Ditto. Try mounting it from under the dash. me personally I'd mount 2 3.5" vs 1 4x8. If you are set on running a retrosound HU and they do split it (not sure how), then go with it. _________________ 1971 Squareback, fully bagged, 1776.

K, that makes more sense. These tabs pictured, I assume just cut them off? |

IIRC, those tabs held a spring/wire that held the speaker up to the dash. That way, it could be replaced without taking the dash cover off.
If you can find a way to use those mounts, this may save you a LOT of work down the road when again replacing the speaker. Maybe use a stock spring, re-bent, or similar trick.
If not, I'd bend them carefully rather than cut them off, so a stock or similar speaker can be installed later by you or a new owner. |

Bingo. Get those and bend to fit your new speaker. |
