Just so you know, the "large felts" are 4 inches too short, because they are bug "felts". Yes I've used them before, but they don't extend into the black lock cover part of the window track. Since you can't see this, most people don't think about it until the felt wears out some (from use) and you get a rattle. I normally use the best part of the old ones to make up the difference in length.
The set I just received from CIP are made in Germany/Netherlands, but are bug sized.
I do agree on trying to use the original clips, as all of the repops are too long. |
Late Type 1, Baywindow, and Type 3 all use the same large felts. P/N 111 837 439D.
Type 3 - # 89
Baywindow - # 13
And I don't have access to a later PDF Beetle version at the moment but this will work for now:

Then you look at #84, 311 837 429B and 311 837 430B and you find these ARE type 3 felts, that are 4 inches longer.
So, you can either use the short BUG part, or try and find the correct TYPE 3 part. Your choice. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

what type of adhesive should i use to glue a tailgate seal in with.
when my resto was done they put the seal in with contact adhesive

and they put the seal on with the wrong side facing out so it leaked.
so want to do it the right way round with the correct glue...... |
We've always used this:

There is a black available as well but I've never used it.
Make sure you install your new seal like this:

Hmmmm. I will have to check. That rear lid seal may also work on type 4 sedan cars with a little modification. Ray |

311837429B & 311837430B are the detachable channel guides. They are left and right specific as noted in the parts book.
#89 is the felt channel which is part # 111837439D. _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red

Yikes! I have installed photos on most of our rubber parts for this reason.
You should see the way some people install our door seals... _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red

Ok,folks,
I wonted to share this with you.
I was yesterday in person in ISP WEST in Carson.CA,spend few hours there
What an experience! !!!
Arrived there at 8:30 in the morning, and Alex was allready there.
He helped me to chose and purchase my notch body seals and some other stuff. What a knowledgeable and professional person, handsdown.
I purchased most of door, hoods, and glass seals there, only thing they did not have are german door seals, which I ordered through CIP1.
For me,leaving between Florida and Europe, this was first ever visit of California, and I had some business to do in LA. Couldn't pass by Carson and not stop there.
The thing is,since my car is in Europe, and I am going there next summer, than I will install all the stuff taken here. Will post pics then.
I want to thank all of you guys who responded to my thread, and special thanls to Michael, who explained everything in his reply, plus helped me through pm contacts with some answers.
You all guys rock!!!
Thanks a million! |

They are correct for 1966 & later models with the seal around the check strap, but this needs to be removed for earlier models which use their own seal. If it's not removed, the door is hard to close along with other issues. Even on later models, these seals are really stiff. |
I’m working on a 66 and the seal is just too thick in the door jamb. The door will close if you slam it but it can’t be good on the hinges. Are you suggesting that I should just trim off the area around the check rod even though it’s technically correct? _________________ 71 Type 1302 Custom

I would probably shave off some of the check strap area on the backside of the seal. That should give you more room and still look factory. _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red
