Just cleaned up an old VW steering gearbox.
It turns very freely and feels ok.
Who can tell me anything about it. Age, etc.
Number on the top is 47.17 with the VW symbol above it.
Thanks
Mike

The alloy cover you have there looks smooth (no reinforcement ribs) so it is somewhat early. Reinforcement ribs were added to the cover to stiffen it somewhere around 1954 if memory serves. (Check in Progressive Refinements) The 47.17 marking remained when the ribs were added, so it was present for many years.

Your pitman arm does not have the early nubbies on the ends ("cams" to help with removal of steering links), but of course it could just be a later replacement. The cams should be present at least through March '53, possibly longer. Also, the absence of a 9 digit part number may also suggest pre-54.
