I read about McCandles a bit more - the kid was stupider than I thought. How does someone go out there in April and die in August of starvation?

Some say his foraging got him killed -eating or mistaking some plants or seeds.

He was out there the proper time and get ready for the winter onslaught... He never made any shelter or none of that. He thought he was gonna be a nomad in Alaska just move from place to place...kinda like the native Americans when they settled in for the winter in an area. If this kid would have at least lived like them maybe he could have made it out to next spring.

Gotta respect mother nature -she is a bitch!

He died because the current in river became too swift, snow melt raised level. Then the seeds made him sick after he was already weakened from malnutrition. Yes he made a series of fatal errors actually reading the book which gives insight and background into his way of thinking by eyewitness accounts of those he knew. He was influenced by Jack London’s Call of the Wild

One of the best accounts is by the person that picked him up hitchhiking and dropped him off nearby where he died. Very sad story.

It is my impression, the kid wanted to die in Alaska. Just by his haphazard attitude to just go and leave everything behind is a clue to his state of mind.

I loved watching the documentary of Richard Proenneke who lived on a homestead...planned it and did it in increments. This is the way to do it if one should want to do this themselves.

It just occurred to me, I actually have friends that live in the woods.
They lived in shit hole rentals for years, while the wife was finishing college and grad. school.
Once She started working, she wanted a place of her own with No Mortgage!
So they bought an undeveloped property south of Effingham, Il.
They had a well dug, put in electricity drop the first year.
The next year they bought a Geodesic Dome house kit, and spent the summer building.
It took them about 5 years working, but they built themselves a pretty nice set up.
They have lived there for the last 20 years, in the woods, in Illinois.
Not what you would call off grid, but they are pretty self sufficient.

I have never lived off the land. Urban/suburban my whole life.
But I dreamed of doing so for decades. Mother Earth News. Modern day homesteaders in Alaska, Coming in to the Country, Five Who Braved Alaska (PBS) and on and on and on.
I would have loved to try.
Now? Way too much work. Dangerous. Health issues.
But I still like to dream.

I will do so living in the woods as part of my retirement. I plan to do so in winter months and emerge in the spring time.

I will buy some land and put up a cabin, deep well... maybe even electricity if not too expensive to run a wire. I am okay without one.

Months in the woods surely will be so relaxing, fireplace and just taking it easy chopping wood. Cook when you need to eat. Maybe even plant some garden for vegetables.

Hunt on the land for meat. Maybe even raise some farm animals. But in our old age, you cannot be too far from the hospital. Laughing
