Stroke is your friend, why limit it to a unclearanced case?

Just have it clearanced and drop an 82 in there with VW journals.

Or if you must, a 74 with VW journals will probably fit. Some rods are chunkier than others, some cases have more meat in some places. And some cam blanks are cast clearanced.

Depends on what Rods you get, I think the small 5/16" ARP bolt super racing H Beam VW crank rods may clear a 76mm stroke crank, Some folks claim 78.4mm crank can be made to work without much hand filing to a Stock Case. Again the Rods matter. I did the 74mm with 5.325" rods both H Beam and I Beam ARP Rods and they worked. But I had to clearance my Piston skirts. Which is easy with an angle grinder. The 74Stroke 5.525" VW rod combo is nice in that it is a stock width engine build that you can use stock pushrods and 69mm stoke "A" offset pistons with etc...

Depends on cylinders, too. I've seen where 88mm piston skirts interfere with a 74mm crank.

I'm building a 74mm crank with 94mm pistons and a 76mm probably would not clear with the 3/8" ARP bolts on the scat 5.4 I-beam rods I have. It was close enough with mine I did some very light clearancing in the cylinder bores on the case for safety factor.

Every 78.4 stroke engine I have built needed clearancing.
