Oh No, the Avion is 20' & 3000-3500 lbs wet-&-loaded. Currently we rent 3/4 ton pick-ups from Enterprise truck rental to tow it, but have been looking off-&-on for a Porsche Cayenne S as the TV for it (all Cayennes are rated to tow 7700 lbs, except the hybrid is a tad less due to battery weight).

I'd tried to upload a pic of it with the Westy at a local show, but posting pix on Samba isn't as straightforward as on other sites, & I don't have time to figure it out right now, & then go thru all of the steps of the process on here to post them. Sort of a PITA.

Cheers!

Tom_T the 1960 Avion T20 even if short is a heavy travel trailer, are you pulling it with your 88 Westy? How many pounds is it? I was at the Flanders NJ show, Air Cooled Gathering show last week and the owner of a small Eriba Puck let us hop in and it was amazing for a small travel trailer. The condition was original and clean fully functional and he paid 6K somewhere here on the east coast. He was puling the 600 lb with a Squareback and also pulls with a late Beetle. Our little airheads always amaze me. I had so much fun I forgot to take a photo. Maybe he is here and will chime in.

Hi Again,

We're looking off-n-on for a nice travel ready Puck to tow with our 1988 Westy that we've had since new - then we can call the combined rig "Repetitively Redundant"! Cool

We already have a restored 1960 Avion T20 (looks like an Airstream) that we take to vintage trailer rallies (we're at the one in Buellton as I type), & a "Lil' Pucker" would give us an option for a smaller rig for the rallies.

But I'm not sure of the cost & effort required to be put into this one that I asked about above.

Cheers!

Let's see if this works to upload ....

Our `88 Westy (OO) after rolling resto/renno in front of our `60 Avion T20 (rental truck TV out of sight in another parking spot).

Adding a Puck to our trailer collection of one will give us another smaller option for vintage trailer rallies etc., which could be towed by the Westy, our `85 BMW 325e E30, or maybe even by my `73 Porsche 914-2.0 if I can find/fab a hitch without cutting the 914 up.

Cheers!

Great you posted your image, good job Tom_T. I didn't know you can rent a truck to pull a small travel trailer that's great to know as I have another project to pick up, and yes an Eriba Puck would be a great addition. I hear I might be able to pull a Puck with my Honda Fit @ 600 lbs. as seen with my westy pre-poptop assembly.

Be aware that only the commercial Truck Rental Branches of the companies allow towing with their rental vehicles - NOT their car rental counterparts, such as Enterprise Car Rental, Hertz, Budget, etc.

So Enterprise Truck Rental (ETR), Ryder, Budget Truck Rental, Hertz Commercial Rentals, Penske, etc. allow towing, but most don't have pick-ups.

Whereas ETR has 3/4 & 1 ton crew cab pick-ups - & occasionally 1/2 ton (as well as box trucks, etc., but no trailer rentals) which are tow equipped & allow towing.

UHaul does allow towing (obviously) & rents flat bed trailers & car haulers - & they'll be more cost effective for local trips, but not on longer trips towing your own trailer, because their trucks only have 4-pin connectors since their trailers use surge brakes. UHaul also has that low daily rate with no "free" miles & charges per mile, which can add up quickly. So for a short local trip UHaul

So if you have your own trailer or are borrowing one with electric brakes, then you'll want to rent from ETR, whose trucks have combo 4 & 7 pin electrical connectors for trailers & can run the brakes, as well as having built in brake controllers.

Since the original Puck was designed for early AC Bugs with 26 HP, your Fit should be more than adequate. IIRC most of the Honda cars are base rated to tow up to 1000 or 1500 lbs, but check your owners manual to be sure.

Curt & others sell hitches for most cars (look on eTrailer.com to start, since they have a lot of how-to articles too), & if you have a choice - go with the 2" receiver type so you can use bike racks without a stupid 1.25" to 2" adapter, since you can mount the proper size ball for your Puck on the 2" tow bar.

Good Luck! Cool

Question
OK ... wait LAGrunthaner ... what is that under the car cover in front of your Bus??

It almost looks like a 914, but the rear deck is too short ... maybe a Honda CR-X del Sol, or an MG/Triumph Spridget??

PostPosted: Thu Nov 22, 2018 4:39 pm    Post subject: New Puck Caretakers Reply with quote

Well - I have an update, & some Puck tire info to share in the next post.

We found a very nice Puck after a couple of years on on & off searching, & are now the new caretakers of the 1970 Puck which has been on here since near the start of this thread - first with TJ/Amishman, then Scott, & now Greg/68Bug-lite has passed the baton to us as caretaker of their little Puck.

We're currently towing it with our OO `88 Westy, but will try to get a factory style 2" receiver hitch made to the factory Euro hitch patter for our `85 BMW 325e E30 as well, if I can find a factory hitch to use as a model for a local shop to fabricate ours.

We wanted a Puck to have the option of towing it with our smaller cars to Vintage Trailer Rallies, etc. - as an alternative to our bigger 21'-6" long Avion T20 in the posted photo above.

We took it on a short weekend 400+/- mile trip from OC to Lake Cachuma near Santa Ynez & Solvang CA last weekend, & she towed well, although we kept it to 50-60 mph most of the time - less on hills/grades.

Unfortunately we got to the campground after dark with the group potluck dinner starting, so I didn't want to mess with unloading & setting up the Puck's bed, & we just slept in the Westy's lower berth. So the camping will need to wait until our next Vintage Trailer Rally.

We did not pursue the Malibu 1967 Puck that we initially looked at & was listed on here at the time of my last posts in September, after consulting with Greg for input on it's condition & need for further work - as we'd done previously in the past couple of years in which we were looking. It then turned out that, due to his changed circumstances, he was considering selling their Puck, & we got all sorts of helpful coaching & help on this wonderful little Puck.

I'll be getting to know more about Pucks & our little Puck, then try to keep it as nice & original as possible, as the new caretakers.

I've attached a couple of pix below FYI.

Cheers! Cool

PostPosted: Thu Nov 22, 2018 4:40 pm    Post subject: Re: Eriba Pucks Reply with quote

This is a current Puck Tires update as of Nov. 2018, on tire availability & sources for Eriba Puck, Pan, Faun, Familia & similar trailers using the 10" rim size, as I just got some for our "new to us" 1970 Puck (used to be TJ/Amishman's Puck discussed above).

For the 145/80R10 tire size - the Kumho's noted above are NLA, as are most or all of the other ones above

There are NO trailer/ST tires available here in the USA at this time, with the low rolling resistance tread design, stronger limited flex sidewalls, & better heat resistance, etc. as needed for a trailer - versus the grippy tread & sidewall flex for good handling on a car.

While Maxxis makes excellent ST & LT tires, & they do make a 145/80R10 trailer tires for the UK/Euro market - the do not have it in the USA. Too bad, because we have Maxxis M8008 ST225/75R15 trailer tires on our bigger vintage 1960 Avion T20 trailer (sim. to Airstream), & their UE-168 LT205/70HR14 tires on our `88 Westfalia - & all are excellent tires!

So we're left with 10" auto tires as used on old school 1960's-70s Mini/Mini Cooper etc. small cars, but Tire Rack, Americas Tires & other local & internet tire sellers no longer carry that size.

Vintage tires sellers like Coker, Lucas, Universal & others do sell a somewhat reasonably priced Camac 145/80R10 auto tire for around $70+/- each, but these have a "Dog Bone" tread design which IMHO will give a pulled trailer much more rolling resistance - as compared to the more lineal tread design as shown in Amishman's post with the Kumho above (those tires are still on our Puck, so due for updating at about 10 years old, although still 80-90% tread still there).

What I found were Falken SN807 145/80SR10 tires, which have a similar linear tread design to the Kumho - & they are carried by several Mini specialists here in the USA, but they apparently mark them up a lot more to almost $300 for 3 (I'm replacing 2 + spare), than do the UK sellers.

Mini Sport USA out of the UK, which are set up at the link below to sell & ship to the USA customers (referred by my 60's Mini buddies), charged me $148 with regular UPS shipping for 3 tires, & they were here in about a week (about the same as Tire Rack, etc.).

https://usa.minisport.com/fal145x10-falken-sincera-sn807-tyre.html

Ignore the 1st online price which includes UK VAT, it changes when you add to your cart & put in your country & state. Also see the tire pic on that link.

Cheers!

I have a 71 Puck and am trying to replace the brake damper. I have the hitch completely dismantled but I still cannot get the damper out of the tube to replace it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

just thought i post some pictures and a little back history on the 1969 Eriba Puck i bought last week on the samba. I saw the add july 25 called that day and bought that day. I bought it from Linda Coldwell the granddaughter of the original owners Dwight and Louise Coldwell. They bought new in 1969 in Glens falls ny at Bromley Imports. They where from Saratoga ny and so was linda she said her grandparents went cross country all through the 70s. And continued to travel all over in the 80s. Linda took owner ship of the puck in the late 80s and traveled the east coast mostly to cape cod and many state parks in ny through the 90s right up about 5 years ago. It did not get much use latley and she decided to sell lucky me. It is in very good shape about 90% original new fabric on cushions and curtains beside that all original inside new tires and rims outside. original propane tank, door keys, pop top, hicth and so on. First 2 pictures is of Dwight and Louise camping in 1970 and the rest is what she looks like now.

After a couple of years of searching I was able to pick this one up from a good friend overseas and ship it to the colonies, it will now spend it's life in sunny California. Cool

Me to it's a very original well kept Puck, and I am still surprised the small Beetles and Squareback's can easily pull them.

Nice find!

Our 1970 Puck in the 1-2 posts above yours is S/N VIN 12879 - so presumably built 560 units after yours.

Cheers!

I don't know, cuz we have a different light type there which uses a standard 110v bulb, & is the same 1/4 cylinder design, as are the lights in our 1960 Avion T20 (looks like an Airstream), because ours was an "Export" version Puck finished out with electrical & appliances & LP in El Segundo CA, IIRC. We have the same stove, sink & icebox as you, but your lights look different on the interior.

Now all you need is a nice Squareback to tow it around! Cool

PS - It may be the old style short flourescent bulb, so try GoWesty.com &/or Camping World online to see if you can find a comparable 1960s-70's VW Westfalia Camper Van &/or other similar trailer lights & bulb. That also could've been a replacement by the PO.

Is that brass/copper colored knob on the rear cabinet underside where you attach the hook-&-wire on the table to hold it up? See this pic & left side of middle, left of lamp in that pic ....

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1936618.jpg

Enjoy Yours!
Tom

These were PO Greg's pix of the rear & the front light too, the 12v fan was added by him - not original.

To the left of the rear light you can see a chromed hole cover where the post or hook for the table's hold-back wire-&-hook would be.

I need to find what the original post or hook would look like.

So can you post a good close-up pic of your post.

Thanx!
Tom

PS - Ours is the same Puck as with Amishman at the start of this topic way back on page 1 of posts or so, & has gone through another PO, then to Greg R., then to us since last Oct. 2018.

It too is mostly original, with new cushion upholstery, outer drapes & pop-top, with the LP tank inside of the stove-top box repainted by Amishman; & the towing electrical cleaned up & exterior underside of the floor repainted by Greg.

Dose any one know what kind of bracket you use to mount hup caps on a 69 puck? I have the original hub caps the P.O. but on different rims. I’ve seen somewhere on the samba a picture of the bracket here is a picture of my hub caps and tire and rim. Thanks
