Part of Auto-Engel close to Frankfurt, once biggest gas station in Germany. Torn down in 1964 to make place for the Autobahn. |

I wonder what the hatch was for? Military van or some sort of camper conversion? It looks like there is a hacked-in side window too. _________________ Andy

Thanks for the link.
I ran your text through Google translate. Do I understand correctly that this was an unofficial camper conversion for their own use?
Google translates your text to say that he contacted you because he saw the licence plate in a car 'champion'. What is a 'champion' in this context?
Thanks _________________ Andy

My English translation:
For many years this 53 Barndoor is used in my website logo.
The original picture was shot in the Mercatorstreet in Amsterdam around 1970. Visible is a worn out, tired and bad maintainment van.
Yesterday evening the owner who shot the picture mentioned to me that he saw this license in a car magazine called the "Autokampioen".(Click for an example)
He bought several volumes of this magazine in the sixties which where dated from the fifties. He remembered reading a article about this particulair van and that's the reason why he photographed it.
Part 2:
See the article from the car magazine "Autokampioen" published on 15 september 1954 with beautiful pictures of the 53 panelvan which was rebuilt to a 4 person campervan for only 800 Guilders.
This was a 700 manhour built prototype camperkit and after installation the total weight of the van was respectable at 1150kg. This effected the cruising speed, fuel consumption and road taxes in a positive way.
This opened the world for many.

Ahh, thank you. Google translate is usually pretty good, but in this case your translation makes much more sense.

Looks that way. If it had a roof rack I would suggest that maybe they were used for steps, but not sure what other purpose they would serve. _________________ nothing |
