I bought a CB maxi pump 2 because I liked the idea of the filter. Thoughts?

Thoughts: that's a great idea !!!

I installed one in my 1600cc rebuild in 2016, and still have the early 1980s Claude's Buggies version in my 1835cc engine, almost 4 decades now.

Yes, you'll need to clearance the cover a little so it doesn't push the tin into rubbing on the pulley, wish CB had fixed this engineering issue decades ago, but wasn't too difficult.

I believe I had to clearance the cover on my first Maxi2 as well, but I can't remember and don't feel like crawling under the VW today to check !!!

I have seen minor to major issues with remote mounted filters over the years. The simplicity of the pump mount spin on filter (if it fits next to a stock muffler, which is a concern I forgot to mention) is good. And the OC25 or Mann 712/6 filters I've used are quality ones.

Do they not fit with stock mufflers ?

I use seal in all my builds. as for the filter pump, use thin oil only, those pumps can have big gears and tiny oil passages.and tend to eat up the drive shaft when thick oil is used(no 20 -50, I wouldent even run 30. about the thickest i would run wood bee 10-20. this oil gets to where it needs to be and removes heat., thick oil uses more power and....oh never mind.

Well, the stock muffler has the tube for the exit port of the heat riser - if it's on the left side of the muffler, depending on the design, it can get in the way of a spin-on filter. Depends on which stock muffler you have.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox.

I use a shorter oil filter on mine.
Look at this photo, see what your stock muffler looks like here, to see if this would fit. Yours may or may not have an original 1974 muffler or 1974 engine, you'd need to check.

I have aftermarket "quiet exhausts" on both my engines that have these Maxi2 units.
