Hi, I had some questions about the throttle ring/ thermostat set up. First, does the linkage rod for the 36hp stale air engine the same as the linkage rod for the 40hp fresh air? Is the thermostat and bracket the same across all years? Will a throttle ring and thermostat control arm from a 36hp stale air fit the 40hp fresh air? Thanks for the help! |

The thermostat and the bracket actually changed during the 40HP run, a couple of months into 1962 production.
The parts book shows only that the rod changed between 36HP and 40HP. _________________ Andy T.

Not part of the OP's original question, but good to know there are a few more differences (mounting bolt size, spring, operating lever)...not sure whether they make any difference in compatibility between the two versions. Here is a great link (scroll down a bit):

You can look up stuff like this and in doing so find out about parts you did not know to ask about in the original VW parts manuals here:
http://www.oacdp.org/
The type 1 parts manual is for now available thru the "Upcoming" button at the top of that web page.
The type 2 manual is a bit more complete page wise, and has nicer coverage of the pre-1968 engine parts. Except for May59 thru AUG1960 the bus used the same engine (with different air cleaner and muffler) as the beetle. Till early 1964 model year when the 1500 became standard for the bus (was an option for 1963 model year) at least for the N. American markets.
Lots of cool exploded diagrams, lists most parts as to what chassi to what chassi a part was used, and with a part number in hand you can do WWW searches for hard to find parts. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Yeah, that's a nice site. Now, I had found VW's own (German language site) of that exact same book long before - it's good in that it has really nice clean diagram images, and it also fills in some of the holes in that "upcoming" page.
Anyway, I did some comparing in the parts books - it is worth mentioning that as for the tail end of the 30bhp/36HP SAE era, The Samba itself has a very nice Type 1 parts book from May 1960:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/60partsmanual.php
And it's kind of sad that the next real date for parts books ends up being August 1971 - by that time VW was turning its back on older applications and superseding parts "well this will work" instead of documenting what was original. Hell, it doesn't even note the aforementioned thermostat/bracket change happening around the start of OCT 61 (while the Workshop Manual and Progressive Refinements certainly do)
Comparing the two, one can see that VW's introduction of a thicker rubber stopper on the throttle ring replaced the earlier nearly flat version. But in the 1971 parts book, it was retroactively applied so one might not know that the 111 119 189 replaced the N 20 002 1 plug (a common rubber plug also used elsewhere on the car) _________________ Andy T.
