You have it correct the firing order is 1 4 3 2. Just verify the other end.

1-4-3-2 clockwise is indeed the correct firing order, however you have to ensure that you pick the #1 slot on the distributor cap correctly or everything following will be wrong.

When the car rolled off the assembly line, it was easy: Pop off the distributor cap, look for a notch in the distributor rim. When the rotor is pointing to that notch, the spark plug wire at that spot on the distributor cap should run to cylinder 1.

HOWEVER this method cannot be relied on unless you know for sure that the distributor drive gear was installed correctly.

So for our purposes, we verify like this:

1) turn the engine over until the timing marks on the pulley are lined up with the seam in the crankcase. Depending on the year your pulley may or may not have a TDC mark but even 5 deg. BTDC or 7.5 deg. BTDC is close enough for this purpose.

2) Now you have to make sure you are on TDC for #1. Remember that the timing marks will come up twice, once on compression stroke for #1 and once on compression stroke for #3. You gotta make sure you're on #1.

3) Remove right side valve cover and check the status of the valves on cylinder 1. If the valve stems are both at same height and you can feel the slack between the rocker arm and valve stem (like at valve adjustment time) then you're at TDC on #1. Whatever spot on the distributor cap the rotor is under at this point is your #1 plug wire.

If when you check the valves on #1, one of the valves is open, then you are at TDC on #3. Rotate the engine another 360 degrees until the timing marks come up again, then you should be at TDC on #1.
