I just bought a sand sprite framed rail probably made in the early 90s late 80's. I am wondering where the vin numbers would be on the frame? |

Because your Dirt Bike was an OEM build so required by Law. Rail buggies are not, and like they said above. Unless it was previously titled their is no VIN, because you have to go through the process, fairly extensive depending on the state you are in, of getting a "Custom Construction" VIN issued by the state. There may be a frame serial number but that is still not a legally a VIN #. Because Sandsprite built a frame...Not a VEHICLE.
If you want to get a VIN at minimum you will need build receipts, Bill of Sale, and a donor VIN to surrender to the state. |

Back when regulations were more relaxed, you could get away with swapping a vin plate from a bug to a rail, but it is illegal. Now days they are much more strict, and your insurance can bone you if they find out that you stole a vin plate from another vehicle...
As mentioned, your motorcycle was an OEM build, so it comes from the factory with a vin. A custom build rail will not come from the manufacturer with one, because it is not a complete vehicle that has gone through testing, inspections, etc. When building a vehicle, that is all on you, so you are responsible for having it inspected in order to receive a vin from the Secretary of State. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

What you have is a Hi-Jumper Sand Sprite IV (4) short back, mid engine.
That was either built by San Fernando Buggy or when the company was sold and renamed Prowlers.
In their catalogs it was suppose to be the lightest of all the chassis they built.
It was available in different length wheel base, also rear could make longer for a bigger engine, (I have seen one with a Chevy V8 engine in it) and also you could have their single A-arm front suspension.
Neither San Fernando Buggy Center or Prowlers had chassis numbers put on them.
In California to get one registered as a Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) you start at DMV with the paper work. Bring Bill of sale, all receipts, and any other paperwork with you describing the what year it may be. And bring the buggy with you for them to inspect. After you pay the fees, which includes the tax on what you paid for the buggy and and any parts.
DMV will send you to the a CHP office (you will have the find the closest one to you and make an appointment) to have them inspect it and install an ID tag on it.
Then you go back to DMV with the paper work from the CHP and if every thing checks out with then, you will get the OHV sticker and registration with the Pink slip showing up in about 7 to 10 days.
I just did this with a buggy I just bought in October. It had never been registered and was from the 1960s.
If engine has a serial number on it, check it against the known numbers in the tech section of the Samba to see what year it is. The earlier the better as you may not need any smog equipment other then a breather hose to the air cleaner.
Do not! volunteer any information unless they ask for it.
Best of luck to you and you have a very nice looking buggy. _________________ Joseph

I really do not want to say it, It is not a Sand Sprite. There were many buggy frame builders back in the early days.
It has some of the chenowth lines in places, but it not a Chenowth.
The rear tires appear to be Armstrong Norseman on Tacoma Wheels. The Norseman were great tires for off road use. Have not been made for a long time.
Enjoy the buggy, have fun putting it together and driving it. _________________ Joseph

Its a White frame rail with a swing axle trans, and spindle mount front rims. There is probably not and never was a VIN assigned to it if you were not given a title upon purchase. So if looking for street legal, keep all build receipts and find the donor motor in a donor that still has the VIN, you'll need it as the sacrificial VIN. Bout all you need to know.
You'll probably want to add some more bracing to the front as well. And your going to want to fabricate a lower engine cage. |

Yeah...Definitely NOT a Sand Sprite nor a Hi Jumper frame. Not by San Fernando Buggy nor Prowlers, who built the above brand name rail frames. Could have been made by the same people who built the Invader or Fugitive frames, although it isn't either of those. The rear hoop sides of the frame are similar to those. And to the BugPack frames. I don't know who built those brands. Somebody here in SoCal.
My friend had a frame kinda similar to the white painted one, but with a longer cockpit, and supposedly a 2+2 seating format. But the rear fiberglass seats were on top of the torsion housing and it put the riders' heads next to the cage uprights which is dangerous for head knocking. _________________ Richard
