Anyone have the specs handy on minimum thickness on early bay drums? Having some braking issues and trying to look from all angles the condition of all the parts I have. I don’t have a Bentley for a transporter.. I only have the beetle Bentley....Yes it’s on my list but everything else seems to be a priority when my parts orders are always stacking up from something breaking or wire out. If any of you could be kind enough to have a look for me I would appreciate it... I cleaned and adjusted the brakes yesterday and I’ve got a consistent meausement on both front drums inside diameter 255mm and trying to see if this is within spec. I searched the interwebs and couldn’t dig up the info.

The wear limit for 68-70 (4 wheel drum buses) is 251.5 mm.

Sure you are measuring accurately?

The max diam. is usually cast right into each drum. If I'm not mistaken, that's required by law
in the U.S.

Agreed, but I think that law went into effect in '72.

i looked to see if specs were cast into the drum... none I could find... To the best of my knowledge i measured the best I could with a metric measuring tape... They are original drums with VW stamped into them... maybe they been turned a bazillion times or maybe I measured wrong... I'll pull them off and try again to get a good reading...

I recall they should be turned/measured with the wheels bolted on.?
At 255 it's a moot point;)

Trim/file/grind a strip of thin steel or heavy wire to the 251.5 mm length, you can double check that with multiple different rulers, tapes or 2 calipers end to end to confirm, then try and fit it into the drum, if it fits the drum is no good.
