So I bought a '72 and its missing the lower heater box tins for sure.
It has J pipes installed so I guess the tins were not reinstalled.
From a search here it looks like the motor should have the dog house with vents and a thermostat ?
The motor is stamped with AD and has dual ports.
Im going to order some used heater boxes and want to get the cooling system back to normal.
I am going to be removing the motor for further inspection. |

On the heater boxes do source out stock german ones in the classifieds. Your lower tins also. So much easier to do with engine out. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Yes buy a dog house fan shroud with flaps and thermostat for proper cooling and warm up. |

The part in this link called a Hoover Bit is very good to have. This link will help you with others parts you might need.

First, feel around the fan shroud, to its front (front is front of VW) left (driver) side and feel whether the existing fan shroud/cooler is doghouse or not (or take some very good pictures in that area, we'll tell you). Just because the case is AD doesn't mean that someone hasn't switched cooler and shroud over the years.
If there's no thermostat rod hanging down, then likely the fan shroud does not still have the flaps. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. if you pull the motor, take the time to remove the cylinder tin to expose any cooling air blocking debris over the cooling fins. also look for casting flash on the fins, particularly on the heads, the flash left from casting can restrict, even fully block airflow thru some of the passages. Use a Dremel, files, knife as needed to remove the flash. There sometime are supposed thru cooling holes near the valve guides that can be totally blocked with casting flash.

Also helps to re-torque all the engine case fasteners as if assembling. Then same for the head stud nuts. Surprising how loose those get. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Reinstalling good, used original German VW heater boxes, the thermostat and flaps is a very good call. Don't overlook making sure your oil bath is also hooked up to the stove pipe and insure the thermostat in the oil bath is functional.
Having a the warm inlet working to the carb's oil bath makes a tremendous difference to your engine on cold mornings.
VW's with all the original thermostat, flaps, tins and working hot air to the oil bath start right up on a cold morning. And, you can immediately drive off. VW's without these parts in place are cold blooded dogs that fall all over themselves until they warm up 5-10-15 minutes later. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

When you find the original cooling tins that go beneath the engine, chances are that the welded nuts' threads will need to be cleaned out and the threads chased. Use an M6 x 1.0 tap for them. Also, the screws that hold the cylinder cover tins to the cylinder heads near the spark plug holes tend to seize from age. Before you break the screw heads due to rust, remove the engine and apply heat from a propane or MAP gas torch to the heads, then give the screw heads a hard tap straight down with a hammer to shock the screw threads loose. Helps to use anti-seize grease on the screw threads for all of the engine so that next time you need to take the tins off, they will loosen easily.
For the heater boxes, the nuts that hold them to the cylinder heads are M8 x 1.25 threads. Chase the heads' studs with a die of that size. Same size as most other M8 studs on the engine, as well as the fender and bumper attachment bolt threads. |

I think I have some sled tins floating around in my garage. I’ll look when I get home tonight. _________________ 2015 VW Passat Wolfsburg Edition

Sometimes the tins aren't installed because the screw heads have broken off, and the broken part extracted or drilled/tapped. Here, the broken part unscrewed when I used a left-hand drill bit.
I made a small sled tin for my engine

Thanks again.
Now I just have to find the time and order the stuff I need.
I just bought this a little over a month ago and want to fix a few things before I drive it again. |
