I threw in a 1300ccm engine which i had and made the new repro rear apron removable with 3 screws per side for better access to the engine later.
It's coming along

Wow, just read thru your build, great job!
Always so good to see a car saved that would probably never see the road again otherwise
I’ve also been impressed with the quality of Hooky’s panels. So nice to see parts that actually fit!!
Keep it up, you’re getting close! I’ll be following

Thanks for all the compliments!
Since the last update the Gartenkäfer "only" needed assembly:
wiring - fuel tank - fenders- front & deck lid - doors and all the small things which take forever
The fuel tank wasn't spared either
So i repaired it
Despite my antipathy for all electrical task as wiring the complete wiring harness i made from scratch came out pretty good.
Everything in its place under the front lid it looks like this:
After a little polish the dirt from over 30 years of sitting in the woods was gone and the original perlwhite appeared again
Everything assembled it looks like this:
TADAAAAAA

GARTENKaFER!!! |
Which details ?? No details on this one haha
Last piece of the puzzle to make it ready for the road was the interior.
When i got the Gartenkäfer there were rats in all of the seats. They smelled badly....
I dismounted the seat covers of the seat frames and washed the covers several times.
Both backrests needed welding because the rat piss made the metal corrode very bad. After welding, the seat frames went to blasting and powder coating.
The pedal assembly also was completely overhauled:
powdercoated in gloss black and zinc plated
Time to get TÜV!!! (technical inspection in germany)
Stay tuned _________________ www.089garage.blogspot.com

We are officially road legal!! Passed the german TÜV at the first try
During the insepction:
PASSED!!!!
I had my paint scanned and had a custom 100% matching spraycan mixed to match og paint with the new paint which tone was far away from the og pearlwhite.
I also painted my wheel centres white. Here are some random shots

What a worthy "gift" for all of your hard work to pass TUeV the first time! The inspector did not say anything about the later, 1300 dual-port engine? Or was he too young to know the difference?
Car looks good with the old-style wheel paint scheme.
You've earned many years of enjoyable driving.
Mengkofen (town sign in your last photo)- I stayed there about 20 years ago for a week-long business trip held in Dingolfing. I think it was at Hotel zur Post... Our team usually drove either to Landshut or to Munich for evening dinner and beer. |

Just found this thread, fantastic info and thanks so much for sharing. Its a huge help to watch the process - my 62 isn't as bad but as I was taking out the luggage shelf this weekend I found some more rust that I wasn't expecting and I had one of those "what have I gotten myself into" moments. So cool to see such a big job tackled one step at a time, and to see so many of the rust issues I'm facing turned into new shiny metal. Added bonus of matching/preserving the OG paint (my goal as well), great job! |

Well done! This thread has made me feel much better about the minimal rust issues on my '62, as well as showing me a good process for repairing these areas!
Thank you for documenting your journey, it is inspiration to continue improving my car. _________________ "A poor workman always blames his parts... Ya gotta have skillz to hang junk." -johnnypan |

Some new picture of the Gartenkäfer. Finally also managed to put on the repaired orginal hood in orginal paint.
Its intersting to see that where the perlwhite is fading, several other colors are appearing.
That means that it was repainted several times already in the facotry
