Making up some tooling to install replaceable cam bearing shells/inserts and repairing thrust for 25hp/36hp VW engines. I will post photos as I move along with this project.

About time SOMEONE came up with tooling so We can have cam bearings for our 36hp case 🤞 I would be interested in this for my 36hp cases ..just one more question will you also be doing these bearing work/ machine work if my 36hp has the later porsche 3 piece cam shaft 🤞🤞..keep up the good work joe aka okrasa ... |

Yes! I have some early, factory stamped Pre-A Porsche 2pc. engine blocks that were ruined by machining the thrust bearing saddle in order to accept the narrower 3pc. cam journal camshaft.
FYI: The 3pc. Porsche cams lifters are designed to contact the lifter lobes at a perfect 90*. The 2pc. block DOES NOT have lifter bosses at this angle!! _________________

Joe, the bearing fitment looks really nice!! Are you able to use a set of 1500/1600 std cam bearings bearings with your tooling? Or will these be special bearings? |

These are "special" bearings. The 1500/1600 cams are altogether different size and wont work.
If they were STD. 1500/1600 brngs. and all you would need to do was bore the brng. saddles,
it would be too easy and no fun.... _________________

Hey Joe, any idea what this my run? This might fix a 25hp case I have. If I can find someone to weld up some corrosion holes in the sump area. |

Problem is the R/D and the tooling costs. Not to mention the set-up costs to do the service. It's too cost prohibitive right now so i'm looking for other methods. _________________

If you can just find some other car bearings that would work. Off the shelf parts would be great. _________________ Old enough to remember THRILLS, the gum that tastes like soap. |

one question, the brass/bronze one looks machined but the other bearings are special too? are there aluminium or bimetal like the type1 ones? thanks |

The aluminum are bimetal and the bronze are machined from bronze round stock. _________________

I posted a short You Tube video showing test fit of camshaft into a Pre-A 2pc. block fitted for bi-metal replaceable bearing shells
and bronze thrust bearing for an engine I'm building for an early 1951 356 Split Porsche Cabriolet, 1500cc / typ 527

Wow looking nice keep the good work ....just wondering how much this will cost for the machine work and bearings .... and will you mass produce the bearing kits or will there only gonna be a limit of kits your gonna make ???? |

Right now, I'm just working on the tooling and trying to make this machining process less expensive so more 25hp / 36hp engine blocks can be saved.
I'm not offering a kit but rather a service that would include the cam tunnel line bore and a set of machined bearings. Cheers! _________________

No updates yet. It maybe awhile since I have (3) Porsche Pre-A 356 2pc. engines on my stands at the moment and want to get those out first... _________________

Hi Joe, my question is why you went with 2 different types of material . Brass and bi-metal . ? I have a similar idea a couple of months ago but is still moving slow right now due to using space heater in shop (in cold as hell ) Illinois. I bought some 660 bronze stock for the material. also what keeps your brass thrust in place . I was toying with the idea of making bronze dowel pins to hold the bearing like the mains are held. |

The reason that the thrust brng. is made of bronze is for durability and repair worn thrust on block in the first place. 1/2 the bronze brng. is being held in
place with a pin screwed into the brng. saddle with half the pin above the brng. surface indexed with a small hole in the brng. to keep it from spinning in it's bore.

Thats some trick machine work. It is great to see innovation like this . when I was looking at the forums a while back to see if it was possible to due this everyone said it could not be done. Not enough material ect.... I still plan on doing it ,but as you said "Problem is the R/D and the tooling costs. Not to mention the set-up costs to do the service. It's too cost prohibitive " . By the time Im done i can see many hours and lots of swearing . I hope you figure out the tooling for this job to make it as common line boring the mains . A lot of early case can be saved , and driven again without worry of the green light of doom on the speedo. |

It leaves me with 1 question... Wouldn't a billet cam with slightly larger bearing diameter and slightly thicker thrust face be a lot easier, and cheaper, and accomplish the desired goal? Something like 0.4mm over and thrust cut. _________________

OK. That sounds very do-able. Can you please post your 36hp billet cam and the tooling you would use to accomplish a concentric oversized bore? _________________
