It works, but the book says three!
Only put two shims in two engines through the years. They worked fine. _________________ Jimbo

A gap is a gap, I don't care if it takes 2 or 5 shims to get there. As long as you get there in the end. VW recommends 3, which is possible with stock/OE quality parts, but due to there being so many aftermarket offerings and combinations out there now you have more variables to play with. |

Why isn't taking .002 off the thrust bearing it's self a solution? _________________ My beetle is not competing with your beetle. I have the yellow beetle in my town. There is a red one, a green one ......

and we dont know zactly what your worken on..... like is this a new build? dod you check to see if the crank is contacting the case keeping the crank forward?? or is the thrust bearing contacting the threst serface on the crank or on the chamfer of the crank???many bearings chamfer does not match after market crank chamfers witch are bigger for strength. if it's contacting the chanfer it will burn up the bearing.....ouch |

Just to clarify, is using 4 shims acceptable?
My current and accurate dial indicator measurements are .011" free play with stock flywheel and .014" with the new flywheel using my old .009 .009 and .0118 shims. Case is a new as41 Brazil case and crank and flywheel are aftermarket. New bearings sit snug in case. |

I ended up using 4 shims which left me with .004”. I could have used 3 with the original flywheel but I wanted to use the new one. Installed a new nut and washer, used some loctite and torqued to 315ft pounds.
